Hello,

I was in an accident and after the car assessment I was told that the price to repair the car is R18K, and because I had basic insurance (3rd party/theft/total loss) then I would have to pay for the repairs. My car is valued at R20K.

This week I called the assessment shop so I can start arrange to sell the car for scraps but they told me the car is a write off which I wasn't expecting.

My inurance policy says I was insured under "Total loss", is that the same as a "write off" and if so would my repair costs mean that my car is a "write off" so I could qualify for a payout?

They will pay you out as the write off is total loss but tbh, think what you are going to replace it with for that value.

Be like this guy...lol

‘Foolish’ car insurance fraud foiled

A “foolish” and brazen fraud of almost R400 000 - allegedly committed by an Ekurhuleni official who had his car burnt to claim insurance money - has been foiled.
Ashley Naicker, a senior clerk in Ekurhuleni’s Springs office, allegedly faked being hijacked in October last year, and had his Volvo V40 T3 burnt to claim money from Hollard Insurance, according to the SAPS.

He was arrested on Friday in his office after police thwarted his elaborate plot. “This guy got two of his colleagues he is working with at the Ekurhuleni metro, telling them they must hijack him and take the vehicle to an open veld between Brakpan and Tsakane - next to Heidelberg Road - where they burnt the car,” said police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora.

“The value of that car was just over R400 000. He couldn’t cope with his monthly instalments. He tried to do these things so the insurance company - Hollard - could settle the car and he could buy another.”

According to Ramphora, Naicker was paid a portion of the R400 000 claim and also received roughly R18 000 “as change”. His accounts have been frozen and police will seek to recover the money.

Ramphora said police worked with Crime Intelligence and the insurance company to investigate the alleged fake hijacking.

“Nothing other than the car was taken from Mr Naicker, not even his cellphone or wallet - no valuables whatsoever. This is what got the police to be very suspicious and involve Crime Intelligence,” he said.

“We tracked down Naicker’s two colleagues, who sang beautifully, like angels,” Ramphora joked.

“We have turned them (the colleagues) into State witnesses because they were very co-operative. We have not charged them. Only the court can decide what to do with them.”

Naicker appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of fraud and perjury, and was granted R3000 bail. His next appearance will be on July 18.

I got another car now, I'm just curious if I do qualify for a cash payout.

LOL.

Someone I worked with once confessed how he too claimed a hijacking and got paid out. His scheme was a bit more elaborate that this "foolish" Naicker. He was never caught. I suspect a lot of people do get away with it.

From your wording it sounds like it yes and I can see articles mentioning total loss cover and payouts but nothing on the Auto and General site. Check your policy wording/document.

Have never hear of this type of policy... wait no, is this that Prime Meridian product?

I would like more information on prime meridian, my colleague drive Toyota Etios she said she pay R1100 no excess fee. Early this year she was involved in a minor accident some guy did dead brake. Prime meridian fixed her car and gave her a courtesy car while her car was in repair.

While me I'm paying R1100 with excess fee of R4500 no courtesy car.

Why don't you ask your colleague?

will depend on your car and risk profile as well.

I have asked her she said it's good but for some reason I have doubts about it. I thought maybe someone here can share more details about PM.

I know why my premium is high my license is new a year old and I'm in my 20s. Car I don't think anyone would want to steal it, it's one of those cars.

It looks like their car insurance product is underwritten by RMB Structured insurance, so you'd probably be all right, it just depends on their service I guess.

I have seen PM advert on TV if I'm not mistaken PM insurance is like you saving, for yourself. Every month premium goes up let me make example.

If I pay R500 every month by the end of the year it will be R6000 if I bump my car and the fixing costs are R7500. PM will give me my R6000 and I will see how I get the rest of the money. I don't know if I'm correct or just talking rubbish maybe someone can correct me.

Premuim goes up? That doesn't make sense.

Okay just called PMD the guy who I spoke to was not that friendly, but he explained to me how does PMD work. I drive Honda Brio 1.2 comfort with PMD my monthly premium will be R608 and it will never increase. Every month I will accumulate R2000 for accident repair and if it happen my car is written off I will get 100% full value of the vehicle (current market value).

The guy who I spoke to sound like he was on lunch he was in a hurry to drop the call. I forgot to ask what happen if I bump into someone else car and if I will get courtesy car.

It's cheap but don't know if cheap is the best way to go really. A year I would accumulate R24000 car repairs are expensive.

So if you bump your car in month two they only pay R4000, etc? Sounds risky lol, especially for something that is meant to be risk cover.
