Hi,
Im under 25, and just got a car.
I called around to ask for comprehensive insurance, and got the following quotes:
Hippo - R1500
Iwyse - R1630
Santam - R1200
Miway - R1270
Glenrand MIB - R3200
Dial Direct - R2200
Outsurance - R3400
Auto & General - R1000

Seems like Auto and General are the ones to go with. Has anyone here ever had experience trying to claim from them? Is it hassle free?

Thanks

My dad and I are with them, so far I haven't had to claim but he has . Sorted out his claims without any issues and paid him out within a few days .

yeah they ok, when I was at uni I had a number of claims under my dad's policy all of which eventually paid out.
But I certainly wouldnt say "hastle free" tho... Dont blindly accept their replacement offers etc, be prepared to argue and fight otherwise they WILL shaft you! (Although suppose will be like this at ALL insurance co's)

Alkit for what car is that and a estimated value maybe?

just a note tho not all "comprehensive" cover is atually comprehensive (in the way u would expect them to be) -> they can basically define comprehensive themselves
they will all have different claims control procedures u will have to comply with
some are going to restrict u to certain repair garages
others are gonna have waaaaaaaaaaay higher excessess

Comprehensive cover
The highest level of car insurance cover, which usually covers you for:

injuries to other people
damage to other people’s property
accidents caused by your passengers or a driver named on your policy
the use of a trailer, while attached to your car
fire damage and/or theft
accidental damage to your own car
medical expenses, up to a stated limit
loss of or damage to personal effects in the car, up to a stated limit

each individuals insurers level of cover on each of the above may be limited to a different amount; and u will have to pay in the highest amount of each claim (the excess) on the cheapest plan (most likely)

Car is a 2009 Honda Jazz EX, estimated market value around R155 000.

I did notice that A&G do have some weird 'additional excesses' like:
R1000 extra for claims in first 12 months, R3500 extra for another driver under 25, R2200 extra for any other driver older than 25, 7.5% if car is stolen etc etc, in addition to the R3000 basic excess. :( .

Santam offered me a no-excess plan for R1100, but they require me to take out home contents insurance with them also.

Not happy to hear how some have had to fight with A&G, because my folks are on mutual and federal and they have always been hassle free and quick to pay. Problem is that they want R1800 to insure my car :(

I hate this under 25 BS, it is what is keeping me from upgrading.

Get used to it.

Don't go for any insurance company giving you that 7.5% pay in for theft, that's BS right there. Unfortunately you're going to be paying through your ass until you're over 25.

Apparantly Hippo considers a 1.6 Hyundai a "high performance vehicle" ROFL.

A warning about A&G...I am presently on to the Ombudsman about them. Their fineprint cuts out most of the things that you think you are covered for...be very very careful!

Alot of insurance companies consider my 1.6 Fiesta to be high Performance as well.
Maybe they define High Performance as anything over a 1400... :wtf:

What I did until I was 25 was have my dad put the car under his insurance at Old Mutual with me as the owner, since you're allowed to insure something that isn't yours as long as it isn't already insured. That way my premiums were sitting about 50% lower than what it would've cost me to take out my own insurance.

OK...coming out of a public forum spat with my tail between my legs and a lesson in maturity quickly brought me to realise that even though we are raped with insurance its something really neccessary. So at least you have a one up on me here by understanding this. MiWay quoted me R634 and that's my premium, it will go lower at the end of this month again. Apparently you must call for a quote every month to see if it will be lower!

I don't see, for your jazz, why its so expensive...

Be very careful going with A&G or any company underwritten by them. They even have a bad reputation in the industry.

:(

My premiums were much lower after including home contents as well...didn't make sense, but what de hell...as long as its lower, i'm not complaining

Oh yeah and this mythical over 25 thing is bull, I was claim free for 3 years after I turned 25 nothing happened, I phoned and they were like oh yes sorry your excess goes down, but your premium remains the same. A lot of places now have it set to 30 grrr one more year wait again.

NO! WTF...I'm looking at the giulietta next year and was clapping hands because I'll be 25 then...now you telling me this shhh...

That's offsides dude.

I swapped over to Outsurance and knocked R500 off my insurance. Phoned them again after my 3yr claim history lapsed and my premium went down another R100.

The value of your car decreases year on year - hence the payout from the insurer should too. They have no reason to keep your premiums from decreasing too. They're clever about it because they do it when you ask for a requotation, but they bank on the rest of the populus NOT querying it.
