Two questions this morning. When does a panelbeater declear a car as a write-off? Is it when the damage is 70% of the value? Can I get a 2nd opinion?

What car is it and how is it damaged ?

If the roof arch bent it's a write off by default. It depends on the type of damage and then the price of the damage. There is more to it than just the damage.

What car is it, what happened and what is the damage ?
Not the price of the damage but the damage itself

It's my girlfriend's Vw Polo. Car crashed into the passenger side. Left front and right door was it. She says the roof had a small dent. (i havent seen the car)

The support beam between the 2 doors, if that is bent beyond a certain point it's scrap'd. That is a vital part of the car's safety shell.

Best is to have it scrap'd, take the money and buy something better. That car even if fixed will not be safe if the Supprt beam was bent ;)

If it is a write off, can I go and get the tyres and max that is a week old?

You can buy back the whole car if you want after the insurance has scrap'd it. The extras you can take of ofc. Depends on the insurance, just chat with them

Okay, thanks all. Any idea where i can get old second hand tyres and rims in the West rand, need to make an exchange today. An specific place?

I'll give you my standard Polo rims for the mags and tyres :D

Sorry mate, no idea :o

All depends on insurance.

I know a mate of mine got his sound gear back when insurance decided its a write-off.

Eitherway, I think you can buy back the wreckage for a few grand if insurances decides its a write-off.

To me this is the best thing to do. Buy the wreck back and sell off the spares of the car. One makes a killing from it :)

Normally 70%, but it does depend on the specific damage. Frankly, if that's what it is, don't try to keep the car. It's simply not worth it - you'll have never-ending hassles.

The insurance company writes it off - not the panel beater. In fact a write off is probably the last thing a panel beater would want :)

And afaik no - unless you want to pay for the tyres they also belong to the insurance company once they've written it off.

The damages of the vehicle need to be either 70% of the insured value of the car, or if safety critical items are damaged. For instance Airbags are very expensice to replace, i have seen cars with little damage but because all the airbags have deployed they write it off. Then the assessor needs to determine whether it will be a code2 3 or 4 again depending on the extent of damages.
Code 2 is just normally when the car is 'uneconomical to repair' basically the cost reaching the 70% mark. But the vehicle is still allowed onto the road as a second hand car. Code 3 a little tricky where the assessor needs to decide that the vehicle can be rebuilt and would still be considered 'safe' but most of the time they are sold for parts. Code 4 is totally scrap, the vehicle cannot be rebuilt under any circumstances.

Looks like it has been given a Code 3. :(

The panel beaters told us this morning, they will allow us to remove the tyres and mags if we replace them with old one's.

Any idea where I can get any old 14" tyres and rimes?

Well looks like we had a lot of problem getting other 14" wheels and rims onto the Polo, still no luck. :(

Something about it needs to be specially fitted due to the brake calipers ect. (not sure, wasn't there when they explained it)

So feel free to go and remove those 14" (200km old) with their mags, if you have old 14" laying around. :( :o
