Any one know if you can get a car key cloned at a locksmith?

I don't expect it to start the car, but at least I want to be able to the open the door or boot with it.

Do locksmiths do this or will I look like an idiot if I ask?

Yes, they do, even with some dealers, they give you a blank, you go to the locksmith to get it cut, go back to the dealer to have it programmed.

They can do all of it at 1/3 of the dealership's price.

My scenario is that when I go surfing, I wanna put key in my wetsuit - cannot do that with key that's got a remote on it.
Didn't lose any key. ;)
My car came with a waterproof key. Using it sets off the alarm, as there is no remote, but once inserted into the ignition the alarm stops.

But honestly, what is wrong with giving the car guards a small amount of money to keep your keys dry?

If you are in Capetown go to Keytronix in Ndabeni, don't use their call out service unless you have money to burn.
For a blank key with no chip(can't start the car) they charged R150 incl cutting the key, locksmiths I phoned quoted from R350-600 for the same thing.

I wouldn't do that personally.

I know some surf spots have got super dedicated car guards but it just feels wrong and if the vehicle disappears while the key is in the guys care what will insurance say?

You're not based in SA, I take it?
I live in Cape Town. In this city, there is a beach in the suburb of Muizenburg. At that beach, which is popular with surfers, there are several car guards. People give these car guards a token sum of money to look after their car keys, while they surf.

This is not a terribly hard concept to grasp.

There's over 100 000 vehicles stolen annually in SA. Not to mention all the thefts from out of vehicles (no accurate number exists as a large number go unreported)

Most people would not be comfortable with handing their keys to a stranger for safe keeping.

This is not a terribly hard concept to grasp.
