Car key duplicate

TLDR:

I'd rather put a bit of trust in the car guards being around to hopefully prevent my window from being smashed open in broad daylight and tip them if everything still good, than actually trusting them with my key, which gives them easy access unnoticable. Big difference.

And yes, I know the local car guards by name, after nearly 10 years... but my trust levels are never going to reach that to trust them with my keys.
I can live with that, although again, if you DONT know them personally.
would you still tip them? I dont think so.

Don't you surfer guys always leave the keys on top of the tyre :)

The only place I'll have guts to do that is like Singapore, Korea or Japan where the chances are like < 0.001% or maybe if I find myself in the middle of nowhere with nobody around in Australia, New Zealand or Canada.

I've seen surfers doing that in Jeffreys Bay, but nope, I won't have the guts to do that in Africa, Europe and most of the western world.

I actually also need a new key. For some reason I only got one and the rubber is wearing out and its becoming hard to press.

Anyone know of the same service around Pretoria?

You just need a new key housing, Fb marketplace is also a good place to look for a deal on housing and complete keys.

Unfortunately not Pretoria but JHB Woodmead there's a place that will rehouse your key in around 10 minutes - National Locksmiths. I'd imagine similar services will be close you to.

*Edit - dealer wanted 4 grand to "replace" the key even though it still worked. Service agent told me about this place.

Builders warehouse sell the housings and have a fair range. You just need to swap the blade and depending on the key type you may need to transfer the transponder thingy.

There's over 100 000 vehicles stolen annually in SA. Not to mention all the thefts from out of vehicles (no accurate number exists as a large number go unreported)

Most people would not be comfortable with handing their keys to a stranger for safe keeping.

This is not a terribly hard concept to grasp.
Most insurers won't pay out if it's stolen.
