Car key was stolen

Hi All,

My car key was stolen along with a bunch of other stuffs.

The question is, do you know of somewhere where i can get a replacement key made and encoded for a cheaper price, as VW is quoting me R3000 odd....

The key is for a VW Polo 1.9 Tdi.

I'd be concerned if you could get keys cut by anyone other than the manufacturer. Doesn't your insurance cover lost keys?

they do, but they are already killing me with the Excess, so if i can get it for cheaper, i'd be happy...
 
There is a reason you can only get it from one place.

Sorry to say it, but you gonna have to cough it up big boy.
 
VW is the only crowd who can actually get a key that will work. You may be able to match the pattern but then it has to be coded, and only they can do it. Works like that with 99% of modern keys.
 
Ha, we use that same type of key on our Jetta. R3000?! Freaking bastards. R50 of metal, R500 of tech. R300 labour. R1000 absolute max for that key eksê. Fine I can see how increasing the price could act as a 'security measure' to some degree... but "security measure" some of that R3000 back to me after you have "verified" me blah blah red tape blah. Sheesh.

As I said before, it's throughout the industry, not just a VW problem.
 
Price is high because only VW can do it, then they can charge whatever they feel like for it. The actual cost of the key to them is probably around R150. The reason only VW can do it is because there's a rolling code in the key, the rolling code uses a PRNG and only VW has the seed to the PRNG.

I know, I don't care who insures me, as long as it is cheap. ;) My wife actually found them. She knows what to look for. :)
 
There's a thread where a guy had a similar problem and he was advised to go check on EBay for a spare.Coding and cutting can be done here.
 
Its best to pay VW and do a proper job. Even if you do manage to get another key cut the transponder inside the key will not match up with what the car expects and therefore it will not start.
 
So how much is your excess? Mine was R250 to replace a stolen key and I also have the 1.9tdi . Unfortunately VW is the only place you are going to get this done
 
The thing is, it was my wallet, cellphone and keys stolen, so they gonna pay out a total amount in cash for all of it. They have covered the total cost of they key, and phone, but then they took off like R2000 for the excess. So now I'm R2000 short on the total needed to replace everything, so im going for a cheaper phone, and was wondering if i could get the keys cheaper somewhere. thanks for all the replies.
 
Just check that the car is still around when you get back home. Whoever stole the keys may come back for the car. Getting another key made is the least of your problems as now someone else has anytime access to the car. The locks need to be replaced as well I'd say. The keys of a friend of mine once got stolen so he went and replaced all the locks. Was an audi. Think the bill came to 15k-20k.

On my Golf 5 TDI which was hijacked and recovered, I had to change the keys and the locks which cost me around R12k.
 
Yep.
If they got your wallet, hopefully it didn't have your address in it.
BUT they can check the phone book for Mr X (off your license/credit cards) and go checking...
