I'm looking for a car kit that connects to my car's existing audio system that can also be used to play MP3s via my phone. I'm assuming a bluetooth kit won't be great for this due to poor audio quality transmitted over bluetooth is this correct? What kind of plug in options are there for a phone (Nokia 5320)?

Get a radio that supports BT. Quick easy, relatively inexpensive too.

I have the MEX-BT2600

Problem is, my car has a built in radio that functions together with the steering wheel controls, so I don't want to end up having a 3rd party head unit in there.

Ouch. Look around for a BT receiver with FM transmitter?

I think I definitely want a "cable" connection, as I'm not happy with FM quality on all my 320kb/s MP3s. Otherwise I could just get an i-trip for my ipod.

That is not correct. The audio is transmitted digitally, it's not the analogue audio stream as with FM. Real pity you cannot got the Sony route. The sounds is perfect, and it has handsfree calling, etc, etc to boot.

You're saying there's no loss of quality when using an itrip kind of device or when transmitting audio via bluetooth?

can't speak for iTrip, but when using that A2DP it's a lossless stream. crystal clear. I can leave my phone in the boot, make & receive calls, listen to mp3s etc, etc

Have/had the same problem, in both our BMW's. Went to NuWorld last night, paid R39 for casette mp3 thingy. + 3.5mm to 2.5mm reduction thingy (nokia e90 is 2.5mm).

Put casette in head unit, connect nokia, start music player (75% volume). Turn on radio.
Turn up volume on steering wheel.

Warm bliss. Vely vely nice. Damn it work nice. Souns even better when wyfie's ipod is connected.

BCO. Have a look at www.smac.co.za They have the Dension range which is sure to have a model that will suite your needs. Personally I use the Dension Ice>Link Plus to connect my Ipod to my Renaults radio via the build-in CD shuttle adapter. Nicely integrated with the use of the remote buttons on the steering. Perfect!

I am pretty happy with my Parrot MK6000, but be aware of a few things:
1. Controls are on the BT unit itself. Steering column controls have no effect.
2. Apparently all BT streaming devices work on pretty thin margins as far as bandwidth is concerned. Stuttering when streaming over these devices is not unknown. I am very happy listening to podcasts on my HTC Touch Pro, but can not vouch for 320 kpbs mp3's.
