Firstly here's what happened Sat afternoon:

A taxi stopped in the left lane on Beyers 2 cars ahead of me, so we all slowed down and stopped behind it, the lady behind me didn't... She hit me so hard that I can only presume she didn't even apply the brakes, the impact then forced me into the car in front and it into the car in front of him.

My car's back end is completely destroyed and at the front my radiator got smashed and the car in front of me's back end is fairly bent, the final car up ahead has a small dent. Her front end is also completely wrecked.

I'm pretty sure my car is a write off... Luckily we just suffered a bit of whiplash from the seat belts, my neck is ****ing killing me though.

What happened after:

Called insurance and they organised a flatbed that took us home(including the terrified dog) and the car to an assessment centre.
I then reported the accident at my police station the following afternoon receiving an "OB" number and was told to call today for the AR number
The woman who hit me then called me(after the 24 hours) and said that it would've taken her police station 3-4 weeks to get an AR number so she never filed a report and would just use my number for her insurance!
I called the police station mon morning and they said it would take at least 2 weeks for the AR number to be generated as they have to send the report to the department where the accident took place
I called my insurance and they had no problem with that and said the claim can still be processed.

2 questions:

1. Will the claim actually be processed without an AR number, cos I can't afford to wait around a month without a car
2. What do I do about the woman who hit me? I'm presuming she's completely screwed?

One final thing, if anyone has access to book values please PM me, I would like to know an approximate amount that may be paid out to see if insurance will shaft me:( Car was bought cash so no finance to worry about.

Thanks!

Go and report it at the station whose jurisdiction it occurred in, IMHO. Much quicker.

This.

When I was hit, I went straight to the police station in that jurisdiction and got my AR number and case number in the same day.

The law stated any police station so I just did that, was a bit difficult to get back there with no car... In hindsight I should've done that but since it's passed the 24 hours and I've already filed a report there's nothing I can do.

Call the copshop and ask if you can do it? You've complied with the law, but now you wanna make everyone's life easier ;)

1 and 2 not your problem.

That is what you have insurance far. Chill, have a beer and start shopping for a new vehicle so long.

2 - 3 weeks for an AR number?!?!? :wtf:

Last time I had to do an Accident Report, I went to the police station (granted the one in the jurisdiction the accident happened), I filled out the form and got given an AR number there and then.

Also, don't stress, contact your insurance, give them whatever you have from the Cops... and also whenever the lady contacts you just tell her to talk to your insurance.. have nothing to do with her at all.

Yup, but if you go to a different station, they post it to the right one, then wait for a postal reply.

Yes, serious.

Go see a doctor regarding your neck. Whiplash can be more severe, leading to cracked vertebrae or other damages.

Ask the police station where you reported it to give you copies of the report, every page. Call the police station in the area where it occurred ask for their fax number or email address, stay on the line as you fax or email... Tell officer Joe to go to the fax machine(yes believe it) With papers in hand ask officer Joe to give you the AR number... proceed to ask officer Joe why there would be a hold up since he's standing with the papers in his hand... get the AR number.

Reload your airtime since it will be in its chops.

Lol. OP, something very similar happened to me on Thursday! I had stopped behind a taxi that randomly decided to become stationary, and then just as the car behind me slowed to a halt too, a car behind them smashed them hard from behind. So car A hit car B, which hit car C (me) and I hit car D (the taxi).

Quite a lot of damage to my car. The shape seems messed up from behind. My insurance is still processing the claim and will send an assessor over soon. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a write-off.

I think I'm going to do this, probably trying to be a bit too helpful because I'm stressed and have never done this before.

What I can say though is I'll never begrudge that premium coming off again, without insurance I would've been completely screwed.

EDIT: and oh yes we saw a doc, no bone damage just soft tissue strain and swelling

Was that southbound by Windsor West? I saw the aftermath when I was coming the other way, assumed it was because of the speed camera that had been there earlier.

Across the road from Peugeot. Not a speed camera, just a taxi and a blind old woman

For what sounds like a severe accident - I am surprised no JMPD / SAPS was on scene to take a statement and take a record of the scene.

They were called but never showed and since there were no injuries once all our respective tow companies arrived we just left.

This thread has highlighted to me how little I know about what to do in an accident.
I barely know who I'm insured with and my cover, let alone what to do if I'm at fault, they're at fault etc.

Need to do some research quick like.

1. Select the "Accident, Emergency and Breakdown Roadside Assist" option from your insurer
2. Get in an accident
3. Phone the emergency number and they'll take you home and your car wherever
4. Report incident at police station within 24hrs(if there's no injuries, otherwise you have to wait for the police unless you're the one being taken to hospital)
5. I'll let you know what happens!
