car Magazine

I have nothing against magazines, just this one. It went from being one of the highlights in a month to a reflection of the boredom that is all around on the roads.

I don't mind them going VAG crazy. VAG have been doing a lot in the market lately across their brands. Tbh it caters to the SA audience. There's a lot more vag products on the road and it has become an aspirational brand. The other big movers in the market are Kia and Hyundai. The Adam is the most noise opel has made in a long while. The new corsa hasn't really been a hit.

Aspirational brand? So people aspire to be like everyone else, since everyone else also has one? They must have really low standards...

Yes dude magazines still very much exist. Walk into any big CNA in you will see the industry is not dead; not by a long shot yet; unlike naysayers that claim that.

Don't be daft, of course I know they do. The point I was trying to make, was that I don't get why, since you can find/read anything on the internet today, for free.

How people are. They well want what everyone else has because it's cool at the time. The Brand has upgraded to a premium image.

Well if we are using Car Magazine as a reference; makes sense seeing as this is a Car Mag thread; the content you get on their site vs their Mag is not the same ie. Site more limiting.

I read/browse both & the site will give one an overview for all things motoring-related. The magazine gives the in depth reviews; analysis; opinions.

The same applies for Topcar & their site & mag & Top Gear SA & their site & their mag.

Only the (paid) digital edition of said magazine(s) would be the same as the print publication.

I would think that if they've upgraded to a premium image, then people would aspire to own something that is premium premium. But since everyone also has an A4 or 3-series, then they should aspire to own something that is premium premium premium. Or just buy a non-German car, and let everyone else keep measuring their dicks while their wallets are being drained, just to prove that they are the same... :D

The market position of VAG is irrelevant here. Just as irrelevant as being unbiased is when you run a publication for general public consumption. This is - more or less - the reason what Hannes left CAR magazine shortly after taking over the reigns.

All magazines that have advertisements in them are biased...how else do you think they get money to publish?

The only magazines that can't be biased are the ones that don't take ads from the same people they write content for/about.

This

The ad revenue from ads is a big chunk of their income. Say something bad about one of their advertisers cars and they will be less inclined to lend you a test car and will obviously cut down on advertising.

I dont think you will get a magazine that has ads in it to be objective. Also the motoring journalist "club" is rather small in SA with a handful of really credible ones. So the lesser known ones will tend to side with the more well known ones.

It is possible to be critical while remaining tactful. I would hope that any half-decent manufacturer would actually welcome such, and address those concerns, hence boosting their credibility in the eyes of the public...

Agreed. But they can be very sensitive at times. I'll admit I haven't really read a recent copy, I've paged through a few and read through some of the articles. I still feel that the journalists are stepping very delicately when it comes to being critical or they're being edited till it seems less harsh.

Look, no car is going to be perfect, but like you said. Manufacturers must be able to take some criticism.
