As the topic states I'm in the market for a newish car.
1. Limit is R82k as I'm buying cash.
2. Not more than 40k km on.
3. Not older than 2008

I'm considering the Kia Picanto special for R70k, anyone with some feedback on this?
The Huydai i10 (not too eager on this).

Any other recommendations?
 
Not good at recommending cheap cars, but always go for the make with best service record like Honda.

Since you may pay lets say R80000 and car with better make is like R100000

You may end up spending more than R20000 in services compared to what you could have saved while spending the extra cash on better make

So thats something for you to think about and also check car magazines they normally give a table which says what car makes/models are best with services etc.
 
I need a small / light on juice car that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, to commute between PTA and JHB so no I'm not.
Found a 2008 yaris 3 door with 29 000km on the clock for R63 000.
Going to go have a look tomorrow.
 
i have one you can buy. i have to sell my car or a bakkie. its a 2008 citrox 1.6 50k on it and spotless. hehehe downside no-air con no power steering hehehe
 
Toyota Yaris best car for your budget. Light on gas/insurance/maintenance, looks fresh and goes well. Good resale also
 
i10 is definitely why ahead of all the other options mentioned here. I have driven all the models from the entry level 1.1 to the new facelifted 1.2 versions and it s a lot of fun to drive. I would buy a New Spark if they were more competitively priced but i10 is currently the best you can do.

Yaris has an el-cheapo dash with a speedo in the middle to cut costs. Aygo looks brilliant on paper but if you have even been in one and even just opened or closed the doors you'll know what cheap and nasty means. Older German cars like the Polo or Corsa can be a bit of a gamble.

My advice to you is to look out for an i10 that fits your budget and then that it for a test drive.
 
The Getz is a lot nicer than the i10, some decent models out there for 80k
 
The new i10's are out... And they're are selling like hotcakes, I'm still waiting for mine, Hyundai said the first 400 to arrive have already been sold, and it only arrived last week.
The new i10 will blow the Yaris anyday
 
Yip, went to look at the new 1.2 last week. If you take into account the quality, price and power (65kw from a 1.2) then its beat most cars in that segment including the New Spark, Vivo and Figo. We also checked out the Aygo and it really is a let down, rather get a Diathsu Charade if you really want that 3cyl engine.

I never liked Hyundai until I got the chance to drive an i10, and it made me change my mind.

I suspect GM will drop prices on the new Spark soon in order to stay competitive.

I think the digital dash looks quite good? My g/f has the yaris, surprisingly spacious if a bit underpowered. Boot is non existant though

yeh, the spark is on special at the moment, but I also prefer the Getz to i10 - even new shape.
wonder if we going to get the i40 sedans here?
 
If your budget is strictly R82000 then I would say go for a 2nd hand Yaris T3.

I'm in the market for a new car for my wife, and my budget is R100 000, R110 000 at most. She refuses to get a 2nd hand car else I would have bought a 2nd hand Yaris.

I took the i10 (the 1.2 GLS Manual) for a test drive on Saturday and I must say I was quite impressed by it, but I don't think (in my opinion) that it is as good as the Yaris. My brother in law has a T1 and the Hyundai felt slower than that car! (note this is here in JHB, maybe at the coast the difference will be smaller).

Obviously the Yaris is a lot more expensive brand new and that's why I'm thinking of getting the i10, but in the 2nd hand market you can get a decent mileage T3 for about R80 0000 and it definitely is very underrated in terms of power. I drove a T3 often in Durban and was amazed at how well it goes for a 1.3! The VVT really helps a lot with the low down torque and keeps it going nicely at freeway speeds and above.

I'm a Toyota fan, but I give credit where it's due, so if you can possibly stretch your budget to the i10, definitely go for it, else get a 2nd hand Yaris. The advantage of getting the i10 is that it is a brand new car with a manufacturers warranty, compared to a 2nd hand car out of warranty most probably, so that is also something to think about. I don't know anyone who has had any major problems with their Yaris but it is something to consider.
