So I’m looking for a vehicle for a staff member whose budget is 50k.

Now gumtree etc has plenty but which brands/models to consider wrt ongoing maintenance and spares availability.

Manual or auto. Medium size.

One eg

Your options will be limited to those unpopular cars on the used market like the Volvo, Peugeot, Renault Fiat Tec, out of all those I would easily go for the Volvo.

Just a note on the Volvo, a colleague of mine owns this exact model and his last service, don't recall if it was major or minor, was 12k at a reputable workshop that specialises in Volvo..

I didn't ask about parts used for the service being after market or OEM, but it seems that they may be costly to maintain.. At the same time they are pretty much bulletproof if you maintain it..

Probably cambelt.

R50k for a Volvo?... Services on that car will cost almost as much. Rather buy a car that's cheap to maintain, like a Toyota, Honda etc.

You won't go wrong with a polo. Parts and services are cheap and freely available.

You have a point. That's why I had a gear lock fitted in mine. But that goes for many car brands. Does that stop people from buying what they desire to have though.

Cheap to buy and maintain:

Nissan Tiida
Chef Avio
Ford Figo
Ford Fiesta
Hyundai Accent
Hyundai Getz 1.4 / 1.6
Mazda 2
Polo
Golf
Kia Picanto

Stay away from GWM, Tata, Dutsan Go and also Chinese crap. Watch out for cars that are expensive to maintain. Volvo, BMW etc.

Make sure you take someone with who knows cars well to check it out.

Thanks.

Are Vw’s as cost effective as TOYOTA to maintain?

Agree with the comment about the below cars.
Nissan Tiida- We have one at home that is used by my lil brother and it is currently sitting at over 250 000km as he drives a lot.
Mazda 2- My brother has one which just turned to 200 000km which needed minimal maintenance only needing normal schedule maintenance.
