Well, I think it's time to move on from my 2007 Ford Fiesta. I am looking for a car that is at most 4 years old, under 100 00 km mileage, automatic, and under R200k. I would prefer a hatchback or an SUV. My options seem to include the Mazda 2 or 3, Hyundai Accent/i20, or a Renault Clio.

Is Renault still regarded as a high cost to maintain French car stereotype? Is 4 years old too stringent a criteria? My thinking is that I will be financing it over 4 years so while all cars depreciate, the ones older than 4 years will be worse off on the resale market. There are some nice Mitsubishi SUVs (ASX) that are a bit older (2012/2013) but seem solid.

Those Mitsubishi never die, but they are really thirsty and with the petrol costing R16/L, it might be expensive option.

I think something like that would be good option.

The Clios are really nice. In terms of the stereotype, I haven't had any issues waiting on parts and find the costs involved not higher than most brands anyway.

The automatics will have the 1.2 turbo motor rather than the 0.9. In my opinion, it's the one to go for. At times, the 0.9 can feel a little sluggish. The 1.2 is just right.

In terms of spec, it will be the Expression derivative. It's good and has all the comforts you need. Dynamique is the one to have but doesn't come in auto unfortunately.

Have a look at the Captur too. That would be my choice in this price range with your requirements.

Thanks - taking a look at the Renault Clio 88kw now. It's between that, the Toyato Auris, and the Kia Rio in my mind, but will have to think carefully and test drive!

Do you only use it in the City? how many ppl you normally carries?

My Wife got her 500 for 6 years, the most reliable 1.2 engine, no turbo, no fuss, just keep going. Super cheap to service (R800) as well and very cheap to buy.

What do they do for R800 service? Sounds a bit a cheap. Even my atos cost me more to service then that.

I can recommend the Kia Rio. I have the hatch Tec, which I bought mine new in 2013. My only gripes:

- The sunroof switch is really awful. It was like this since I bought it. A friend of mine bought the same model at the same time I did, and he has the same problem.
- Tyres are expensive AF, especially if you get a well known brand, and they don't last long at all
- OEM parts are pricey to the point where I think they are out of their minds. To give you an idea:
* Front brake discs: R2400 a pop
* Front brake pads: R900 a pop
* Rear right passenger locking mechanism / actuator: R2055

I haven't had any mechanical issues. Dealing with Kia can be a pain though, but from what I've seen, it's more or less the same at any car dealership.

Something else I've learned is if something breaks in the warranty period, even if you suspect something is breaking, get it looked at ASAP. A month out of factory warranty, central locking went pear, and I had to replace the locking mechanism in the door. Went to Kia to negotiate, and they refused to budge. Saved a good R750ish replacing it myself, but it still burned.

Services at Kia are also pretty pricey, and I couldn't work out why. I've kept all the invoices since I got the car, and it looks like a steady 10 -> 15% increase every year, no matter what's done. I am very much well out of the loop when it comes to servicing costs for other cars and brands, so I'm not sure how much value for money they are compared to other cars.

If you go on reliability and features alone, then it's great buy. Have low power expectations with that 1.4 engine though, unless you don't mind high revs.

I was in the same boat, I opted for a 2011 Mercedez-Benz B200. It's a bit older than I wanted but it was below 100 000km mileage.

City only, and it usually carries 1, sometimes 2. I am looking for reliability more than speed at this point, as I am reaaaaaaly sick and tired of forking out for repairs on my (older) Fiesta.

Ah that is very interesting. My main criteria is reliability. I am most likely going to buy one used, however, so no service/maintenance plan is a slight concern...

What are you looking at paying back monthly on a R200k vehicle with a good credit rating?

Just engine Oil, oil Filter and air filter.
But i take it to independent mechie, i do not trust any dealership nowadays

i think a non turbo Fiat 500 will suit your need, but you need to look out for a well care of used one, they should be in R150k mark for a 2015, 2016 model
