Hi Petrolheads,

My car has just failed the test because the ESP and run flat light are 'on' in the console. The car passed every other aspect of the test. I do a reset and the light come back on moments later. My question isn't about what is causing the lights to come on (remain on). But rather why , these lights result in a failure. My argument is if a had an older car which didn't have this function the car would have passed.

Would it not be something like, "no warning lights should be appearing on the dash"? Your argument can then be countered with something like my Corsa without those fancy systems would fail if any warning lights of the functionalities it has would result in failure?

My understanding is that having a malfunctioning system in such a car is undesirable as these systems are at times designed to depend on each other for a proper functioning of the machine. Therefore it is better not to have a certain functionality at all, it is not integrated onto the ECU to function in tandem with other systems, unlike having one which is not functioning the way it is supposed to be.

Try making the tyre pressure the same, park the car a level spot (garage, at the petrol pump etc), switch it on and then press and hold the TSP until it resets. This works on our CX-5.

On another note, had the ESP and Anti-skip control lights come on on a VW Touran - turned out to the an engine fault. Had a friend with a Polo have the EPC light constantly on - this was a faulty brake switch
