For example Exedy/ Daiken factory manufacturers OEM Honda clutches.
Alot of VW parts/cars are manufactured in RSA

Hunt around for an Indy mechanic, and provide the parts.. it will come in much much cheaper.

The car manufactures don't reinvent the wheel when it comes to common parts on the car. SACHS and LUKS supply most of the German car manufacturers with clutches and flywheels, and then you also have Bosch who supply a lot of the electronics and pumps on the car - the stealership just stamp on their own brand and add a markup.
Of course there are imitation/generic parts that are cheaper, but in your case you can get that clutch kit for cheaper at Goldwagen or Masterparts. The belt is also crazy expensive.
The other major problem here is the labour - R620 an hour
A lot of the indie mechanics will charge anywhere between R350 and R450 and do just as good a job.Pyro

This wasn't just the clutch.
Looks reasonable to me, especially at dealer rates. Of course, that's if all the systems needed replacement in the first place.
Matter of interest, what Honda mech do you use? I'm currently waiting for a few parts, but need work done on mine.

Pooky, always shop around. Even check for places where they break up cars for spares in some instances.
A few years ago I had to replace my instrument cluster for my car. R13000 from Audi Centurion.
4 Rings in Edenvale = R1500. When I got there the owner gave it to me R1000.
R12000 saved!

Shop around definitely, I've only ever encountered VW being better priced than anywhere else and that was for my mirror 
other than that they are ridiculously priced, don't go to Bosch Service Centers either they are maybe R150 cheaper.

Not something I'd recommend for something like a clutch where the labour is a large part of the cost and second hand parts aren't necessarily in great nick.

The only problem I have with that quote is the labour charge. We are currently charging R 500/hr and I'm not impressed with that, as it's a ripoff. R 620 is crazy money!

Car's love to drive them, hate owning them.
Fortunately my father-in-law is a mechanic so i often do this.
This is the worst part about owning a car because you never know who's ripping you off.
I have a BMW and the service i get from them is awful.
I also know a guy who works at a Mercedes dealer. Now most service centers have software and it estimates the time it should take to do a service or even a more major job and that's the minimum the charge. So if a mechanic often ends up charging 12 or more hours during a 8 hour work day. The mechanics end up rushing their work just so they get to bill more hours.
So even if you not getting robbed you still getting some kid rushing though the work.
A mate had his car serviced and they left the oil cap off, two blocks down the road the things smoking and blowing oil all over the place.

I also heard this from a mech in the dealership
They remove parts from in motor plan cars and put them on Non - Motor plan cars. When the motorplan car then gives a problem they just claim on the plan

People 'fail to realise' it because it's not a universal truth. People who aren't careful in their purchases run the high risk of getting an inferior product from Midas et al, instead of the genuine article at the dealers. Sure, you can get a Bosch fuel pump at Autozone, but if you don't specify you'll end up with a fong-kong 'bargain' that won't last 4 months.
You didn't get a full clutch kit. Not for R400.
No, it's a reasonable bill. The labour rates are fairly steep, but the bottom-line figure isn't terrible.
I had issues with a tapit cover gasket. I bought two of these supposed OEM things from Goldwagen and Midas and both were duds! When I bought the part from VW it was significantly different to these other parts and worked the first time. I can also say I had an issue with a heater valve bought from Goldwagen and again it was a dud. The time wasted on removing and installing the cheap parts cost alot more than the originals did. Other standard oems like oil filters, air filters etc i have been ok with. Specialised parts I'm a sceptic.
