Would any of you be able to recommend a good place to have my car serviced?

She's 1500km away from 90 000km and im guessing 90 000 is going to be a big service. I would like to take her to a place where will have at least some peace of mind where they wont break something and have to wait 2 more weeks to have it fixed. (i had trouble with GM in Isando at the beginning of the year when my clutch broke - they broke my ignition and my airbags and hooter)

Fanks hey :D

R&D Motors - great work; he kept my old Golf going through several iterations (1.3 - 1.8 engines) and there's nowhere else I really want to take anything else I drive.

Heh ..RTFM FTW! Still, nothing like bonding with - 'friending' (innit?) your mechanic online, beats having to struggle to get calls through! Oh, and if Robin (somehow) misbehaves, get Jo to smack him or something...

If you can see if you have a Bosch service centre in your area - they really do excellent work - even on non-German cars. 90 000km is not that big a service, 75 000 probably was since it was your first cambelt service.

Ok so here's a list of all the places i've phoned for quotes on getting my car serviced:

Bosch Car Service in Randburg - they quoted me R1899 ex VAT for my 90 000km service

Fury Hyde Park - R2200 incl VAT (this is for a minor services as my car's cambelt was replaced on 75 000km by them)

R & D Motors Northriding as per bdt's recomendations - R700

So i guess i'll be taking my car R & D Motors to see what their service is like.

thanks again for all the help :D

That cheap

I'd stick with Bosch - they are very reputable.
I know what you're thinking and, on balance of probabilities, life being what it, I'd usually side with you on this one. Not here tho'; when you consider that your mechanic keeps together the thing that gets you around in this somewhat dangerous country of ours, I've effectively put my life in his hands for the last decade or so. That's plenty reputable enough for me.

imo if its a minor service, any decent place can do it, as a minor service doesn't entail much work...

...but when its time for the major one, i'd go with the dealer or bosch

sometimes there guys rip us off. i guess people want to pay more anyway... i don't think a corsa is a complicate car so i think they should be fine....

a friend of mine took his car to bosch and he had to take it back a coupe of times because they had done a sh1ty job... so expensive is not always better

My friend too his Polo Playa to a VW dealership to be serviced, 2 weeks later he heard abnormal engine noises, took it back and they found one of the newly replaced spark plug was dead.

After it was replaced (under warranty), there are further noises, I opened up the boot, and found the v belt was badly damaged/worn, how could the service people didn't check this and get it replaced? Serious hardzard as my friend drives to Free State quite often.

Took the car to another mechanic and was told the air con pump is not working properly, hence the noise.....

This is a official VW dealership!

90 000km's isn't really a mayor service (same as 30 000 and 60 000km service), fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter and apparently the brake pipes and hoses need to be replaced. As per every service oil change and oil filter are changed also.

Every 75 000 km's is a mayor service because of a cambelt change.

I guess it comes down to the service people then.

Bosch in Stellenbosch is know as Mette's Auto Electrical and is run by a guy call Klaus-Peter Mette. He is a perfectionist and so is the rest of his team. I take my car there because I know it will get serviced well.

They have won a few consumer satisfaction awards - which I think is a hard thing to do in the auto service industry.

i wonder who and where are some award winners in the jhb area

Well, to bring this thread back into action:

At the last service place I went to (won't mention the b*st*rds - who are a chain BTW) they tried to tell me that I needed to pay R1800 extra for a complete brake overhaul. Which might have been considered, except that the brakes had been done not a month or two prior. So I've been looking for a reputable mechanic and having read through the posts above, and noting that service time was around the corner, I decided to look up R&D Motors as suggested...

Definately worth every cent paid to them for the service. They were spot on with an issue that was wrong with the car, and actually pointed out another one that I didn't know about (actually showed me on the car what was wrong and explained why), which made sense considering the symptoms I had noticed.

Anyways, I definately would recommend them to anyone in Joburg looking for a reliable service for their vehicle!
