Car Services - Jhb

Well, to bring this thread back into action:

At the last service place I went to (won't mention the b*st*rds - who are a chain BTW) they tried to tell me that I needed to pay R1800 extra for a complete brake overhaul.
Oh poo, rather name and shame!

Which might have been considered, except that the brakes had been done not a month or two prior.
Because they're clearly (from what you said) engaged in opportunistic, FUD-based malpractice. I don't know if it can be called extortionist but I sure as hell want to.

So I've been looking for a reputable mechanic and having read through the posts above, and noting that service time was around the corner, I decided to look up R&D Motors as suggested...

Definately worth every cent paid to them for the service. They were spot on with an issue that was wrong with the car, and actually pointed out another one that I didn't know about (actually showed me on the car what was wrong and explained why), which made sense considering the symptoms I had noticed.

Anyways, I definately would recommend them to anyone in Joburg looking for a reliable service for their vehicle!
Heh, Robin's a character but he definitely knows his stuff. And he's a decent character too which, in this day and age, sadly, is all too lacking.

For sure - definately knows what he is talking about. And agreed, not the usual type of mechanic attitude - he's quite the humourous one!!!! :D
But I'll only b taking my vehicles to them for mechanical work from now on...

Could swear I saw something about naming and shaming on this forum, so if it's out of line, mods, please remove...

Them F**kers that tried to tell me that the brakes needed replacement are none other than Car Service City. I'm not going to say that they are all like that, and I'm sure there may be good branches, but the one I was at was somewhat shady and unfortunately, when they tried to get cash for problems that weren't there, the entire lot got my dissaproval...

Right here is EXACTLY why we should haul bad service (never mind the attempted outright thievery you say you had tried on you) into public view: it stops them from being able to do it to other people and, as a direct result, we the buying public are actually in a position to decide whether to vote with our wallets.

Of course, the .za buying public is known for being particularly pathetic when it comes to consumer activism but this is the kind of thing that will help get it going ..eventually.

Also, as we've seen with itBust , it IS possible for damagement to engage with we the paying public for the betterment of all: we get better services and they get happy customers ..the BEST kind - the ones that will opine that they have/had good service somewhere. IOW the one kind of advertising no money can really buy.

..oh, the above is meant to infer that Car Service City damagement are now in a much better position to find out about that kind of behaviour and, who knows, may even take steps to rectify the situation ..surely a good thing, yes?

Ok ppls so i have finally had the chance to take my car in for service and i went to R&D Motors as was suggested by bdt and i have to say i am very very impressed with their service. It cost me R700 to have my 2003 Corsa serviced. i also asked Robin to check and maybe replace my front brakes but he advised that it was unecessary as my brakes are still fine.

If this was any other company they would just have replaced the brakes....or maybe not even replaced them and then just charge me for the repalycement thereof.

So all in all i will most certainly take my car there for her next service! :D

Anyone used R and D motors recently, are they still any good / reliable or is there somewhere else I can take my Toyota Corrolla?

Thanks

Stay away from Bosch - I've used them twice so far at 2 different dealerships and had bad experiences on both occasions. Both are now no longer part of the franchise - probably due to the complaints. Also stay away from Motolube, Automate and all those franchises that offer major services at ridiculously low prices. Seems like they have guys off the street working for them, and they don't always use the correct parts, e.g. they used a smaller (shorter) oil filter on my car than what's required, and don't let me start with the cheap plugs they use.

Thanks, will get in touch with them. I mainly wanted to know if anyone has used Robins - R & D Motors services recently?
