I just bought an old car cash... I just noticed on the "certificate of registration" the title holders name is different to the guys name who sold me the car. I've got a copy of his ID but obviously that doesn't match the "title holder" & "owner" part of the registration document.

I was just about to go and have it registered in my name tomorrow, I've done the roadworthy today.

Is this a problem or what must I do?

It does not look good, the guy who sold you the car should provide the answers, at best he could have not bothered to change ownership and at worst he could have sold a car which is not his to sell.

but do I need a copy of the guys ID who's name is on the title deed?

pretty sure he is legit, he does buy and sell things and was on a forum for years.

unless he's just given me an old title deed and not a new one which is registered in his name? Is there a way to check that?

I've sold many second-hand vehicles over the years (that belonged to me) and I have never once given a copy of my ID to anyone nor would I ever. The buyer of the car does NOT need a copy of the seller's ID.

ah thanks for the heads up, I do have the yellow signed form from the seller and proof of payment if needed. :)

There are 2 problems here though:

1) The seller is supposed to keep possession of the yellow form and hand it in, not the buyer.

2) The details of the seller on the yellow form must match exactly the details on the registration document of the vehicle.

ok.... on the yellow form its just got a signature.. I mean I could fill in any details that are needed.

The yellow form is meant to protect the seller in the case of the buyer not registering the car in their name with the blue form. It allows for the seller to deregister the car from their name and therefore protect themselves from fines, etc.

The buyer has to fill in the blue form, and then hand it in along with their ID, proof of sale, such as a receipt of sale, proof of residence, and the original vehicle registration document. Don't hand in the yellow form, because you are not the seller of the vehicle.

ok... this is confusing lol.
I'm going to ask one of those "queue for you" type of crowd to do it, they should be able to come and tell me everything I need and don't need etc. I hope.

Depends on the registering authority, some do, they also often want to see the signed sale agreement.

You are confused because @deweyzeph explained it in a confusing manner, some registering authorities does allow the buyer to hand in all the forms, the blue and the yellow. If the seller is handing in the yellow form they will supply their ID with the form, because it will be required, if however you submit all the forms, including the yellow one, you will need the seller's ID, and yes it has to match what is in the registration papers.

As he has said, it is always a good practice for the seller to submit the yellow form and not trust the buyer to do it because sometimes buyers are just happy that they have the car and do not do the ownership change.

In your case the problem is that the ID copy you have is useless because it doesn't belong to the owner of the car so even the "queue for you" companies will not be able to help you without a copy of the owner's ID.

yeah licence is all good, disc is valid for a long time.
got the original registration papers.
on my new roadworthy it does say "police clearance - cleared"
should be all good to go :) I hope

I give up with this place, now these queuing people are asking for a certified copy of the sellers ID...
