Hey guys,

SO about a week ago I was the victim of affirmative shopping.

In short, car stolen.

While the insurance does their thing I've started looking around, and hell, it's amazing nowadays how little "car" you get for under R220K. Bloody ridiculous. I mean, the Toyota Yaris now runs at R190K! Are you kidding me?

I've been looking into the Kia Cerato Koup for a while now, and maybe the time is ripe for a welcome upgrade from my downgrade to a Yaris 3 years ago. So that's one...but I am still looking for something maybe a tad cheaper, but at least up to date technologically.

I am sure, since I mentioned the Koup that someone will bring up the Rio TEC or similar. They're also fine but stock's a big issue. I have an insurance-hire car for the time being, so I also cant wait months for a car.

I wont buy a Toyota again though. (Lets not get into my buying experience with them...)

So who's driving what out there and are you happy with it? Or, advice in terms of cars I can look at will also be great.

My mother just bought the new Toyota Etios, low cost and decent features. Have a look at that otherwise two years ago or so I bought my wife a i20 which is really nice as well but costs quite a bit. I've heard decent things about KIA but also been told services post 40k or service plan get very pricey.

good luck... been the victim of affirmative shopping three times the past two years. and every time i lost a small fortune. everybody told me to buy a volv0 - so i did, but they lately steal even volvo's. then i bought a toyota fortuner and that had been stolen as well.then tried a b-class merc, needless to say, been part of affirmative shopping as well. so i did what every midlive crises guy do and bought a porche and that had not yet been stolen.

kia offer great value for money and their 5-10 year warrentee makes it a very good buy.

Kia Cerato is a great buy - big fan of that car. Be aware though, quite a few facelift models from various manufacturers are coming out pretty soon.

Affirmative shopping! :D:D I lolled..

Anyway.. my opinion: buy good secondhand, bought a 2007 Getz 1.4HS with everything(61,000km with 2year warranty on it) in 2010 for R86k, which was the best(most options, specs etc) I could get for the cheapest and hasn't given me any problems yet, same as a I20(only different body - like the Getz look more!), as I also cannot justify paying so much for a car these days.. just insane!

Anyway, depends on what car you want to have.. but I recommend buy a 2-5 year old car(one which has a 5-year warranty and still covered under it), low km's for as cheap as possible.. will save on insurance, and if you should nick or bump it it won't cost a fortune!

PS - found out this week my Getz replacement value only around 60k now, son of a..!

I looked at 2nd hand earlier this year and the prices where insane. If your looking for a low cost car your better off buying new (2yr old cars with 25'000km on the clock where 10% cheaper than new ones). The dealerships confirmed that budget cars have a high resale value due to the demand. I ended up buying new.

If the cost of petrol & insurance was not an issue, then I would have bought a lovely 2nd hand 4x4

Honda Ballade most definitely.

If that's too expensive then Rio 1.4 Tec.

Have a look at Ford, you can get a 2010 Ford Focus SI 2.0 a/t for 150-180. Got mine from eagle ford last month. Awesome car to drive and comes with all the extras. Mine cost R149900 and had 15000km.

A older V8 Land Rover ... Just never leave the tank full ... If they have to fill the tank to be able to get away, they'll never make any profit.

Ouch!!!!

But thanks for all the comments guys.

Some more info I think is worth sharing:

As a rental they gave me an i10. Nice and compact, excellent fuel efficiency, but it has zero power...also probably considering that it's an 1100. Aside from that the rental is still new...less than 10k km's on it, but, nothing in the car works anymore except the cd player...all other features are shot. Which to me is not so good, considering the age of the car.

Secondhand is not a no-go area for me, but with the average 5yr/100K km plans most cars come with nowadays, I need something with low mileage on the clock. I commute about 60 - 80kms a day in total. I know it's not much compared to others but those km's add up quickly and eat away at the motor/service plan a while before the 5 year mark is reached.

When I bought my now-stolen yaris 3 years ago (as a demo from Toyota with their 1.2 million point checks) the car ran down tyres in the front like crazy...a week after I took possession of the car the two front wheels were run smooth. Phoned toyota and "the tyres are not covered under the warranty". Jeesh, ok...but should one of the checks not be the alignment and balancing? I had issues with those wheels for moths until, at last, Hi-Q managed to fix it.
Aside from that the salesman had no idea what specs the vehicle had in terms of features which I only found out after owning the car for a day or so. Some features he sold me on was not present. Again reported to Toyota, no real resolution. Just a "sorry for you...". Luckily today the new CPA will help with issues like these, but Toyota is out! On that I'm also a bit weary of secondhand cars but not closed to the idea.

Anyway, I also extended the service plan to 180 000km's. I was looking into selling it some months ago, but the extended plan does not even get considered to add value to the trade/selling price, which to me is BS but that seemed to be the way things are done. So I will really reconsider taking out an extended plan again, despite the fact that it's relatively inexpensive.

I looked at the Rio 1.4 Tec. Also a lot of car for a good price. The problem is the dealer told me straight to not even ask about them 'cos there's a stock shortage. They will only be getting stock again in 2013 apparently. As soon as my insurance jazz is sorted (hopefully this week) I have until around the end of November (as hire-car is for 27 days) to find new wheels.

I had a look at the Etios, although I am not really looking into doing business with Toyota again. Anyway, yes, it's well priced but it looks to me like it's also a similar setup as the polo vivo where you buy the car standard, and then everything else (cd-player etc) you've to add on. Is this correct?

I've been in a Jazz before. The Ballade is definitely a step above.
