A collegue had a taxi drive into her a few days ago, and the bill on her Mercedes C230 Coupe was R85,000.00 to repair. I would have thought this to be a write off :/

At what point is a car a write off?

I think if the engine and drive train were affected it should be a write off.
If he hit her on the side, not so. Insurance will pay for it though.... right?

As far as I'm aware it is 80% of book value. Places will quote about 5k less than 80% of book value so they get the work.

It was the side ...

When the repair quote is over the book value of the car IIRC...

Ah - so still reasonably far from book :/ She doesn't want it anymore

I wrote my car of on Tuesday it was not such big damage body wise but the airbags popped.and that is said to cost around R90000 so if the repair costs more than 70% of the cars value it gets scraped my car only had 10 000 KM and it was also caused by a taxi.

Wont take much damage on a Mercedes to reach R85000.00. LOL

Beyond economical repair

Is the correct term to use.

I would assume R 85 000.00 is less than what the car is worth thus it will be repaired. Insurance will not pay to have damage of R 85 000 repaired if the car is only worth R 50 000 as an example.

Well it all depends on who the insurer is.

My mom wrote her VW Jetta off in April this year. It took the insurer only 3.5 months to write the car off. That also only happened after the panelbeater discovered damage that he is not allowed to repair and VW would not have approved the car as save, that forced the insurer to write the car off.

Good luck though! This can get really messy!

I hope that bit is sarcasm, because I could never wait that long on an insurer to make a decision on my car!

I had my Astra written off in a matter of a 9 days or so when a drunk dude drove into the back of my car and that pissed me off waiting for that long!

It varies between 70% and 85% of the book value of the car before they'll write it off iirc.

And R85k damange on a Merc is not very much.... Mine was originally quoted at R94k and all I did was damage the right fender and the bumper.

No its not. When the panelbeater eventually said that he is not allowed to do further work on the car (and that is after he ordered and received all the parts to fix the car), it took First for Women about 30min to OK the write off.

It eventually ended up in the Gauteng regional manager of First for Women calling my mom a b@tch and everything.

She is now with Alexander Forbes (AFI) - a bit more expensive but you don't get better, I'm also with AFI.

First for Women
yes, yes I know! that says it all! These people are useless!! Stay away!!

i know someone with a new opel Corsa, market value at time of accident was R130 000, accident damage (two bumpers, and left suspension) came to R81 500.00 insurance paid-out for repairs.

It also depends on the age of the car and the type of damage.

In my moms case, the Jetta was 2006 model with 85 000+ damage. The airbags didn't pop, but there were nothing left of the nose of the car. I have the photo's posted on my profile - go and have a look if you want...

Photo's: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/album.php?albumid=434. She hit a car that was standing sideways on the highway at 100km/h. Nobody was hurt!

Damn Mieliespoor, hectic.

I too had to go via hellopeter and numerous calls to a manager in JHB to get my case sorted.

Never touch budget again.

That's just

100km impact, and airbags didn't pop?? WTF? Remind me never to buy a Merc:erm:

The airbag was not supposed to pop. Because of the nature of the impact the airbags was not needed - its by design.

The airbag was also not needed, neither my mom, nor her friend sustained any injuries at all.

It was not a Merc, but a VW ;)
