Card reader for Galaxy Tab 3?

Hey all, I just got my Galaxy tab 3, 10.1. My wife take her canon camera on holidays, and we would like to be able to download her photos on the tab, and if possible, backup it from there, to my external drive.

Then I want to keep my kids happy in the car, with videos, which I thought on loading to the usb stick, and whatch on the tablet.

I bought a card reader, which also reads usb, but when I insert it, it lights up, but nothing happens on the tablet. Do I maybe need an app or something, or another reader, or what can I do to get this working?

Aslo, a tablet won't be able to power a portable external HDD if you plug it in.

Not sure if the same applies with that tab but the Galaxy 12.2 will take a 128GB micro sim whilst the specs say max 64GB, same as your does.
Maybe worth some research if your planning to add storage , not cheap but gets you storage if you want it that way.
