Hey guys,

I'm currently in my final undergrad year of a BCom(rat.) CS&IS Course at NMMU. Essentially its a BCom CS&IS degree and a BCom Accounting for Chartered Accountants all rolled up into one, over 4 years instead of the usual 3.

I'm a bit stuck though deciding whether I should do honours in accounting and get my CA, or get my honours in computers and then do honours in accounting and finish my CA.

Its a tough choice, because I'm good at both and enjoy aspects of both courses and to be honest with all the possible career fields both courses offer, I find it difficult to imagine where I see myself in 10 years time. However, I'm already a year older than my class mates, due to the length of the dual major degree, and I'm worried that if I decide to do both honours courses I'll only finish my articles by the time I'm 27 (read as: omg I feel old).

Anyone done here done their articles, would it be possible to do computer honours part time during 1st year articles - seeing as the 1st board exam is in Jan. from next year on?

Any advice/personal experiences would be greatly appreciated, this has been giving me sleepless nights for months.

My experience is to get your CA out of the way. Even though you may be doing articles, If you are qualified (e.g pass part 1 or even a CA) you get paid more than a normal article clerk with say just honours.

Also its easier to branch off into different career paths having done a CA and then doing an IT qualification (rather than the other way around)

look at it this way, you will be a CA at 27 which is an achievement to be proud of - do yourself a favour and browse career junction to see the opportunities for CA's
