Actually it is John Carmack and John Romero that created Doom.

This might be best for JC, tinkers need tinkering and he'd done the engine. I would too if I was given the option between engine and oculus.
 
He will probably go start something else, just like everyone else does when they leave a big company, make millions and then EA or Blizzard will buy them. :D
