i would suggest you guys sign up to www.digital-car.co.uk as we are making the scen move forward at an incredible pace. also, newby friendly, not like www.mp3car.com which is run by a bunch of knobs.
this last weekend has seen:
destinator 6 working on pc,
iphone skin for roadrunner
and many other improvements to the car pc scene.
p.s. power is either via an invertor (inelegant, inefficient but cost effective) or via a dedicated psu, i.e. the opus range, m1-atx /m2-atx or a carnetix psu.
these have shutdown controllers built in, so when your accessory line goes low (remove key from car) it "presses" the power button on the pc to shut it down. no faffing about.
for screens, linitx.com now do a high brightness tmr screen which, if you are buying a new screen, if a must have. 7".

well, i prefer the method of using a proper DC to DC power suppy which shuts down the pc properly, although these are not available yet. I am waiting for www.moved.co.za to get started, then i will order through them.
Glad to let you guys know some stock has arrived and is available on www.solveur.co.za. I got 7inch in dash screen and 7 inch motorized touch as well. Got some power supplies and gps receivers too. Also put forums on there so we can get a south african carpc scene going. Have fun...

you really should think of stocking the new intel mini-itx board, d201gly
it's only $75, including a 1.3ghz celeron-m, which should make it the same price as the m1-atx you have in stock, i.e. half the price of that via m1000.

reason i say this is because those epia board, although popular, are helluva expensive, and even the m12000 i have isnt really enough to run any flash based themes smoothly, nevermind any decent winamp vis, especialyl when you have navigation going at the sam e time etc.
also, a voom case or a packbox would be handy, but i understand they are bulkier to stock.

Thanks for pointing that out. Only reason I have VIA board is cause there is a local supplier. I would much prefer the Intel, just have to see if it is going to be available locally. If not, I'll bring them in.
I have an M10000 and I agree, it is a tad underpowered. Would love to test that Intel.
As far as Voom case, I have one, its just so friggin heavy, it kills the shipping costs... I am looking at having cases made here.

Destinator Maps
Is anyone interested in getting Destinator maps for SA? Destinator is the GPS routing program used by Map Monkey, Centrafuse and a few others. I am talking to the suppliers in Germany, (sprichst du Deutsches) and am hoping to get some sent this week or next. Probably looking at about 120euros. It also works in PDA's I think.
Let me know.

they all work a bit rubbish in direct sunlight.
except for two that come to mind
mp3car.com do a sunlight readable display, for around double the price of a normal display
and linitx.com do a high brightness tmr display for about 1.6 times the price
but if you DONT have a convertible, and you have slightly tinted windows then it isnt an issue at all.
in a normal saloon with normal windows it is visible 90% of the time for me. and for the other 10% i can still hear the satnav lady speaking, so who cares.

only the maps from destinator3 work with mapmonkey and freedrive.
currently, the maps you will get are at d6 level...please check this thread fully, as we are 10% away from having it working 100%

If all you want to do is watch movies and play audio, one can get one of these new multimedia players (R850 to R2000), put whatever harddrive size you want in with the relevant media files on it (plays tons of formats), buy the car 12v converter for the unit (somewhat harder to source, dumb SA suppliers 
) and have a LCD with AV and/or DVI that can run off 12v and you should be set for entertainment on the road...

That mean boxen for Atom boards, like the one that's now available from the usual suspects? Also, what drives can it take ITO HDD 'n optical ..and let's not forget the backplate!

If you need a program to play the music/videos then your probably gonna use Winamp

We're hoping to create a new version soon with support for a bunch of different themes (for example someone could make a quick skin that looks just like BMW/Merc/Audi/... car system) and an even better layout.
But if your gonna use Winamp in your car then you'll need that skin

Ok i know this thread is a bit old... but im seriously looking at starting a web based shop for car pc components. I just have a few questions for you guys:
1. How much would you be willing to pay for a basic system? ie, screen, harddrive, ram, motherboard, startup/shutdown power controler. please remeber that a 7" Widescreen TRANSFLECTIVE VGA/Composite with Touchscreen costs about R4000+ shipping...
2. would you want it un built(parts are sent to you with nothing being assembled/ semibuilt(basic things put together)/ or completly built?
3. In dash(double din format) or under seat(boot) for the main compu parts?
4. What accessories? ie, radio, built in amp, blue tooth, wireless cards, sound cards, cd roms, etc...
5. what car do you drive?
6. Would you be willing to purchase a double din screen, power supply and motherboard combo(in a prefabricated double din unit with mounting points) and then either add your own components or order them from the same place to make your own custom pc. Price will be determinded by the components and can be made vehicle specific, ie, no cutting of dash.
