Carputer, car pc, woteva, I'm sourcing components...

Contributing to the redistribution effort

Well, my car was stolen with my car pc in... The police said they'd get it back to me asap.

Anyway, I'm building another one. If anyone is interested in getting some stuff from UK or USA, (I'll decide which is more cost-effective) we can share the shipping costs since the rand has taken such a knock.

I'll probably go with the same kit, M1-ATX PSU and a mini-itx board. Lemme know.
 
Got it! All my stuff got here, and I have put it in, got a lot of tweaking and finishing to do but CarPC 2 is up and running. I was also wondering how many other guys have car pc's? I saw one in a Ford ST and I have seen one in a 4x4. Any others? Really keen to know.

Aopen makes a mini PC almost same size as a car radio that runs on laptop psu 19V

yeah, i got one in an e36 bmw.
epia m2-12000. 512mb ram, 80gb 2.5" ide. dlink usb radio, usb gps receiver, usb bluetooth, usb tv tuner, roadrunner frontend, freedrive for gps (wiht destinator maps) and freephone for cell phone duties, win xp pro, homemade case, with opus150psu and linitx 7" touchscreen mounted where the obc used to go.
gimme a shout if you need help, i'm on carpc #3 now and year 4.:-)

Where are you?

Are you in the UK? Cause then I'm afraid you don't count. ;-) Us lowly South African's need some local versions of great software, for instance, we don't have destinator here as far as I can tell. Just Garmin with their stupid proprietary GPS format.

I've seen s.a. maps for sale somewhere..I'll try find them.
Yeah, besides the gps side of life everything translates perfectly to s.a. :-) I know s.a. maps for destinator are available, so the option is there, see here

freedrive uses d3 maps, but you can get d6 or destinatorPN maps working if you cut them first with mapcutter.

I'm currently using nRoute from Garmin which isn't bad, but I haven't seen any skinability to make it easier for car use. So I am trying to find something like mapMonkey or similar that has been integrated into RoadRunner or similar.
 
Hi Rtaxerxes, have only joined today, but have been reading the forums regarding carputer possibilities for some time.
You mention you are using nRoute, have you tried the PC version of Handy MAP? This should work. i am using that on my laptop currently, so i am sure it would work in the car too. I am very keen on fitting a carputer to my Golf 5. I am thinking of using a double din HeadUnit from www.tftcar.com
They have a nice unit which incorporates a 6,5" screen with DVD player and built in Radio and amp with a VGA input. is there any chance of sourcing a DC to DC power supply as well as a itx form factor mother board locally? if not, then i will have to purchase all components from overseas. Your input would be appreciated.

No, not yet, I am reading through all the forums to get a better understanding of what it is that i need. Ideally I need the following to work:

FM Radio
DVD, MP3
Navigation
Hands free
voice recorder
Calculator

I have started chatting to www.moved.co.za

They will soon be importing (per order) from overseas. Basically the stuff that is available form www.cartft.com
So i am hoping to start ordering some equipment.

The first item would be a VGA 7" touch screen which i would need to install into the double din opening of the Golf 5. I want the whole installation to look as OEM as possible.

Also, the interface i want to use for the touch screen needs to look the part (ie like a Golf 5 red and blue)

The guys from www.moved.co.za have not finished their website yet, so i am waiting patiently:)
