Carte Blanche

I think we need one thread, probably stickied in this section, where we can discuss every weeks episode of Carte Blanche.

Yup. Give everyone else some rest. That programme is starting to sound like the Daily Sun.

"Metro cops' psychic powers convince motorists to bribe them..."

Thing is, if you knew you would get nailed by a cop if you tried to bribe him would you still try..? As much as the public is to blame all of this is merely made possible by the cops complete lack of any moral fibre whatsoever!

surely if you report them for trying to take a bribe your infraction will be forgotten and you wont have to pay a bribe, therefore you get off scott free?

SA among top 20 most dangerous places

And with corrupt cops there's no ways we can get off this list of most dangerous places.

SA among top 20 most dangerous places

Terror-reeling India and South Africa have something in common: both are rated as one of the world's 20 most dangerous countries.

Backed by travel advice issued by the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), London's The Telegraph newspaper has placed South Africa alongside Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Colombia, Haiti, Eritrea, Pakistan, Burundi, Nigeria and the DRC in terms of danger to travellers.

Its sad to see increasing corrupt police officials and citizens.
In SA's case I have some understanding of the need for citizens to bribe - they need to bribe their way out or face abuse by cops and be placed in a cell and be subject to further abuse by jailed thugs.

With leaders like AIDS shower boy Zuma, Selebi, and McBribe, the cops have the green light to continue their illegal activities

What makes the threat of jail worse, is that it isn't warranted in most cases. It's sole purpose is to scare people into paying a bribe. More cops need to be prosecuted for wrongful arrest.

As for bribes, I think you first need to look at why an otherwise law abiding citizen would break the law (re: the initial offence, not the bribe). For example, speeding - is the speed limit set correctly or is it purely there to make money from fines (think of the 80 zones on the N3 past PMB), No drivers licence - try get a booking legally (good luck, use Valium), drunk driving (yes, it is a serious offence) - no safe and reliable public transport.

Both parties are guilty when a bribe is paid, but in this country its normally the offender offering the bribe, rather than the cops asking for it (my experience). I suggest getting drivers to "buy into" (marketing buzzword - sorry) the law. To achieve this, motorists need to feel that the law is fair and just, and not feel that a bribe is more fair than a fine. Brute force hardly ever works in these situations.

Move to Cape Town.

Hardly any road blocks so there's little opportunity for bribes.
There certainly isn't enough Road Blocks in and around Cape Town.
The cops are probably scared to give themselves too much work. Just recently they had a Road Block in a far southern suburb and 30% of the people tested positive for drugs.

This is what the kit looks like > Clampdown on drugged drivers

These threads annoy me. How about posting a link to the stories or a summary of what transpired in the episode so the community who did not get to see it can contribute to the discussion?

Oh my god...
So Metro cops earn about R120k from bribes
This is a disgrace.

But lets Toyi Toyi why dont we. This is proof how the ANC gvt have allowed this country to go down the drain.

Most people on this forum have no issue with bribing a metro cop, they are all part of the problem.

Care to back that statement up with some proof?

The Metro created the hotline as a smoke screen to claim that they are doing something about corrupt cops, but we all know that the only way to address this is by sting operations, but then where do you find a few cops with integrity to perform the sting, and look how Zuma, Selebi, and McBribe have dodged the justice system.

Would you rather pay the spot fine or get arrested by the Gestapo and probably get raped in jail? The Metro cops should not accept or ask for the brines in the first place. They are supposed to be of a higher moral standing.

How was that idiot on the phone? No you must photocopy the money or write down the serial numbers. Do you know how many numbers are on the bloody note you thick idiot?

What a convinient excuse for curruption.

Here is a novel idea, DONT BREAK THE LAW! Then you would not have to bribe anyone.

Funny how the people on camera were not breaking the law but were pulled over anyway and then ASKED for a bribe. The cops are the ones who ask. Would you rather oblige or go to jail by these animals?

I did not watch the show yesterday, however I doubt the cop would ask for a bribe if the motorist did NOTHING wrong.

Why would one pay a bribe if it is not to get out of trouble?

EDIT: As for your question, dont do the crime if you cant do the time. As they say.

Maybe you should give that brilliant advice to the Metro cops.
Go watch the show. So you telling me you have never been just pulled over randomly and asked for a bribe?

And the phone call she made proved the point perfectly.
CB: Is this where you report corruption..?
Hotline: Yes...Eerrrr...do you have a photocopy or a video...?
CB: Of what..?
Hotline: Or a photo...or you need to write the serial number down of the money that you gave to the cop...
CB: How the hell am I supposed to do that..?
Hotline: Well, then you don't haver a case....

This definitely sounds like a highly efficient system:rolleyes:
