Was about to say, merely investigate each and every cops bank statement and you'll soon know who's on the take and who is not but alas I doubt the political will exists to conduct such an exercise. Do you think these crooked cops are paying their taxes on their "extra income"? Pathetic...

How often does it happen that people are threatened by the cops to pay a bribe or get arrested?

Fair enough i can believe it does happen. But certainly the vast majority of cops taking bribes do so when a person breaks the law, be it, drunk driving, missing a stop street, speeding etc. People must be legit and refuse to pay a bribe and take their punishment for breaking the law and pay penalty.

For those instances where cops do threaten arrest illegally, report these offficers.

True. In one instance during the Carte Blanche reporting, some lady had been driving a car that was not legally licensed to be on the road. Her number plate was different to the registration on the car's disc. The cop threatened to arrest her for driving a "stolen car" unless she paid R1000 spot fine.

So, she broke the law and the cop solicited a bribe.

I am sure you are right - but I am one of those where one of the Metro plods tried it on by claiming that I hadn't stopped at a stop street. I told him write the ticket and I'll see him in court. Funnily enough he backed down.

And then directly afterwards went to the police station and reported it WITHOUT any action taken against the police orifice.

There is a tall-free number. However, you have to be able to prove that there was a bribe (photos, video, etc). If you do manage to get this act on film, you'll have to prove in turn, that you didn't entrap the officer.

In short, there is a way to report it, however nothing will come of it.

As with any crime that is prosecuted, you need evidence.

Since when are citizens responsible to do the police's job?

Do you write down the serial numbers of all the money in your possession for the off chance of getting asked to bribe? How is that camera in your car?

Finding the guilty in these cases are not difficult, as was shown on Carte Blanche. The guilty pay in way more money into their bank accounts, than what they would be able to earn lawfully. When this was brought to the attention of the authorities, they did nothing.

Instead of making wishy washy comments, prove what you say with some solid data. The users of this forum represent a minuscule fraction of the road users. How does that lead you to conclude that they are part of the problem?

Could the process of paying your fines or to dispute incidents be too difficult? Could it not be the Metrocops who are abusing their power and preying on innocent people by giving false information?

Most people on this forum make massively sweeping generalizations and then use those to jump to wild conclusions, such as shifting of responsibility of the obviously incorrect actions of corrupt cops.

You might actually have had some point underneath there somewhere, but it was lost in the delivery.

I know someone who was robbed by the metro cops of several thousand Rands, they were threatened to be thrown in jail if they reported it ... it wasn't even a bribe, it was in effect an armed robbery ... thing is, if you have an aggressive and threatening cop, who knows your details such as where you live, in a position of power, with uncertain outcome if you report it (as you report to a 'corrupt system') and potential serious danger to yourself and your loved ones .... well, fact is, most people would be too scared to report such things, and with good reason. Few in their right mind would choose to e.g. place their family in danger (or themselves - perhaps the breadwinner - in danger or in a position of being thrown in jail where any horrible thing can happen) for a bit of money or whatever stolen by a corrupt cop.

It's easy to be full of bravado about what you "would do" when it happens to you, but you'll only know your reaction (logical or otherwise) when you're in the situation.

I wasn't sure whether I wanted to laugh or cry at the 24-hour report-a-cop thing. You must write down the serial numbers of the bank notes you give the officer in question in order for matters to even be considered. Why not just write his name and badge number accompanied by a cell phone mugshot of the guy while you're at it?

Wonder how much it'd cost to hire out some metro escorts for a day? I'm sure if you're willing to cough up enough cash, you could have your very own blue light brigade. I suspect however that the deal wouldn't include lunch.
