Cast-iron pans

No when I say older I mean like 2-3 years ago. The one I linked earlier in the thread.
I'm looking at a pan I picked up last week. Machine washing is fine.

Yeah I do the same, can’t let that bacon magic go to waste.
Funny enough I usually cook my bacon in the oven rather than in a pan, unless I'm seasoning cast iron.

Like I said before it’s “fine” but it’s not great.

Washing my pans with just warm water and a brush definitely makes them more nonstick than the alternatives with soap or dishwashers.

The secondary problem of course is also it’s very hard to make that thing fit and if you don’t run the dishwasher every single night you end up washing it by hand anyway.

But tell you what for shits and giggles before I run the dishwasher again I’ll make a fried egg in my LC and then smash it through the dishwasher and do it again afterwards taking notes.

Air fryer for me.

But I recently got a grill pan and it’s been quite fun to amuse the children with bacon that has likes across and also makes draining the fat off so much easier.

Need to find the exact temperature for it still, but may just become my go to method when doing only one packet.

Seems I’m at least not completely mad.

This is what I suspect I was thinking of specific to the Black Satin enamel and which is exactly my experience.

Interesting it’s left out on the local website.

Pans with black satin interior can be washed in the dishwasher, but this greatly reduces the development of a patina; as a result, grills and skillets will require oiling for a longer period. Pans with wooden handles are not dishwasher-safe.

And that’s the same logic I apply to non-coated cast iron where you need to re-season it often if you use the dishwasher or harsh soap.

Much easier to just avoid it entirely unless absolutely necessary.

I've got two, use them almost exclusively, those Megamasters you can buy at Makro, a small one and a medium one. Love them. Once you get used to them you can cook almost anything in them, from carbonara to steak, and they're perfect for finishing a dish in the oven. Very easy to keep clean as well, as long as you use common sense.

They're just heavy, so I'd like to get a carbon steel pan some day.

Edit: What I mean by common sense:
Rinse the pan with hot water after use. I use a soft, non-abrasive sponge and some dishwashing liquid if I have to, but it's usually not necessary.
Dry with a towel, make sure it's completely dry.
That's it.

That’s the one thing I love is just sticking it straight in the oven.

And you are quite right on the weight, it’s great 99% of the time but you aren’t flipping any pancakes with these.

Almost smashes my ceramic top when I tried that.

How silly. Bacon and eggs in one pan is the ****.
Oven cooked bacon is better. The fat renders much better than pan frying, with the possible exception of starting with a layer of water in it. There's nothing stoping you from collecting the fat and using it to fry your eggs.

And I can cook a couple packs at a time in the oven. ;)

Who needs a couple of packs of bacon at a time?

Oh, and all that extra cleaning up. Bugger that. One pan and done. I do the same with my steak and eggs.

We regularly eat a pack, or the equivalent of since I often make my own, at a time. More if we have guests.

You lay it out on a baking sheet, put it in a cold oven crank the heat and 25 minutes later its perfectly cooked. No muss, no fuss.

Yeah, it's brutal.

What's your hat got to do with it?

Are you weak?
Yes. What's that to you?

But also my wife and mother-in-law complain about heavy stuff.

I'm not sure that's what's meant when "carbon steel" is used normally.

It looks like this:

Definitely not non-stick coated, you season it the same as cast iron.

Buy em direct from China at CJ's in Cyrildene.

So I bought a piece of rubbish?
Bummer, oh well only 79 bux

On the topic what the world needs is really just a 300g pack of bacon.

200g is stupid and the odd brand with 250g is just not enough.

So I buy 1kg packs and split them out but it’s annoying.
