Cast-iron pans

Are you getting a good deal anywhere? I used to get these frozen from catering placed like CAB Foods / Flexi Foods but post pandemic the quality has become shocking.

Checkers (Hyper) has a brand I don’t remember the name of now which you find under the pork section…oddly not in the bacon section.

Fruit & Veg also used to have but it’s been years since I’ve gone there.

So after this thread a couple of days ago, I decided to check around on Gumtree for any cast iron.

Someone was selling this Lodge set for R1500

Got some pics from him to check the condition and bargained him down to R1100 for it:
  • 5 Quart Seasoned Cast Iron Dutch Oven (With Lid)
  • 10.5 Inch Seasoned Cast Iron Griddle
  • 10.25 Inch Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet
  • 8 Inch Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet
Fetched it this morning. Great condition, just needs some seasoning and they're all good to go.

Damn what a score.

All this time I thought I had a cast iron Le Creuset pan, but it turns out it's alu toughened non-stick, this model. But the nonstick has worn off so I've tried seasoning it... I'm tempted to take it to them and see if they can redo the surface for me.

I do have some cast iron ware that I should show here, it's no special brand or anything though, but I don't care it works great.

They should just replace it depending on exactly how it's come off.

Same. Useless waste of money in my books.
Yeah look it was Monopoly money and 40% off so not a major loss.

Even if I use it just for fish and toasties it will be a winner.

Surprisingly much easier to clean than I expected, but can be treacherous with high beam water going directly into it....this may just be a job for the dishwasher.

I can't get my head around those bloody griddle pans.
Sear on the stove, finish in the oven, one pan. Reverse sear on the pan in the oven then slap it onto the range, one pan.

I prefer these because you can get four steaks or a bunch of cutlets on one:

I must agree though that Le Creuset isn't offering anything special here, you could go for any brand and probably save a bit of cash.

Seasoned them yesterday, and used one for eggs last night. Perfect. Looking forward to using the rest.

Except the dutch oven. That'll be my third raw cast iron/4th overall. Might actually make more sense to gift it to a friend.

Fish? That might be a good idea.

Another thing that it might weirdly be a good idea for is longer cooks in the oven for things like pork belly.

Was worried I ordered too big, but it's actually fine. Thanks for helping make up my mind.

Nice. How are you finding the weight?

Yeah by and large I’ve seen them being lauded specifically for fish and meat cuts with the odd vegetable in the mix where you want a char.

Getting the heat right seems a bit tricky, suspect I need to adjust my logic to run it just a bit hotter than a normal flat pan.

It's ridged grill pans I find completely useless but if that one is smooth on the other side, and you can use it for pancakes or other griddle foods then I'd buy one.

EDIT: ok, it is reversable

but it's $550 so I'm going to pass.

This, however, looks worthwhile: https://www.lecreuset.co.za/products/cast-iron/skillet-grills-grills/rectangular-flat-grillplancha
