A crowd of people tried to hack meat off cattle after a trailer they were being transported in overturned on the N1 in Gauteng, the NSPCA said on Wednesday.

"With knives and buckets, the mob was chasing cattle that had managed to release themselves from the vehicle, some of which had injuries including broken legs. Their intention was to hack meat from the living animals," the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said in a statement.

"Some animals were unable to escape and were stolen or slaughtered by the frenzied crowd."

The driver allegedly lost control of the truck near the Grasmere toll plaze around 5pm on Tuesday after rocks were thrown at his vehicle from a bridge.

The NSPCA, police, fire and rescue units, and the traffic department worked to clear the road, control the crowd, and free trapped cattle using the Jaws of Life.

Some of the cattle who were "beyond salvation" were slaughtered on the scene.

Oh what the hell, I give this a solid TIA!

Fek... at least kill the animals first.

Sure... if people can use for food then great, waste not.... but cutting meat off a live corpse. FEKKKKKKKK!

Savages gonna Savage !

That's ****ed up, they should hack a limb or two off the criminals that did this.

What's a live corpse?

Live is pronounced differently depending on use.

EG:
This is a live wire.
Is this how you live your life?

EDIT : oops, not sure what a live corpse is lmao!

Wow, then people call slaughterhouses barbaric... This is sickening. They may be stamped under survival, apartheid remnants etc. it don't change the FACT that education (discipline attached) is a priority. I will also throw service delivery into this... and our poorer economy.
