I was roped into a N21/Amway presentation last night ... it was horrible :(

Never thought I'd fall for one - but because I was introduced by a friend who I thought had a decent head on his shoulders, I assumed 'business opportunity' and 'franchise business' meant an actual business.

Oh well ...

Hello, I am prince from Nigeria. I need to escape to South Africa but I need to take my large fortune with me. To do so I will need to use a bank account in your country.

:D:D:D

I've got a colleague that tried getting me to go along to one of those.

It really took a lot of effort to fend him off.
They paint a nice picture for you, but it's really not worth my time.

omg seriously???

I got roped into attending one on tues... Except mine was for World Ventures... I wanted to shoot the guy who invited me, I thought I was supporting him in his new business... what a moron  I escaped asap with my mate and we couldn't contain our laughter- we literally cracked up 2 steps from the hosts. Then that feeling quickly changed to anger at having been lied to in order to attend.

The first thing the host said was "Who here would like to earn more money?" F then I knew what I was in for. I could not keep a straight face throughout... what a waste of time. The videos they showed were far too slick and they skipped over the signup fees far too quickly.

It's pathetic that the only way they get people to attend is by duping them and inviting them under false pretences! I thought I was attending an 'event'

Pyramid schemes ftw

Search Amway on this forum and they're *very* accurate with how it works ;) Basically, a pyramid scheme

timgaul - actually cancelled the 1st time because I knew something was up, but decided to go the 2nd time because it was a friend ... only reason!

Yup back in the my naive days i was told i had won a big screen tv, so i went and the guy tried to sell me this stuff and make me look feel like a cheap fool in front of my fiancee. Did not work o and i could have won a big screen if i guessed 12 numbers out of 12 in a lotto style game.

Now i hear the words hello is this name surname and i say yes but i am interested and put the phone down.

In the late 90's a friend tried to 'recruit' me for Amway and even then I told him to get lost. Then, like the OP, someone who I thought was quite sensible invited me the other day. Even after I told her I didn't sign up in the 90's so why now, she invited me again! Claims doctor friends of hers are giving the presentations...

These people must be really really desperate if they're willing to go out of their way to invite people who they know would probably not be interested :/

The thing is, if you get in early enough you CAN make money from it. But only if you're in super early. And the people you recruit are dumb enough but it's always the little people who get screwed over

People have yet to realise that there is rarely, if ever, a quick fix to earning extra cash, at least not long term...

Jaaa Boet.... AMWAY SCAMWAY ...it rhimes PERFECTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had an "acquaintance's brother" coming to my house 7 years ago with the same bull****...AND I ASKED BEFOREHAND what it would be about, but only time teaches one that BS is as abundant as the air we breathe in. Needless to say, it was horrible and I could see this guy was in it so deep, he NEEDED to drag other people down with him to make himself believe that he did not make the wrong choice himself. At the bottom of the snakepit one's resources seem so far away from oneself...doesn't it????
He talked about how his uncle DOCTOR , his SCAMWAY mentor, makes all this money and yada yada....but when I asked him if he had made enough money out of the scheme to buy this dream car he mentioned all the time, he could not answer me.
IT's ALL ABOUT BRAINWASHING PEOPLE, INNOCENT ONES!!!

It saddens me when intelligent, educated and (above-all) NON-marketing types are caught up in these schemes. They either need to learn to become glib sales-people, or wind up feeding the machine with their blood, sweat and tears.

We've lost friendships because of Network21. To quote the last female who tried to pitch us: "we're not Amway, we just sell their wonderful products".

They have tons of doctors, dentists and architects it seems ;P They also love pointing out how they retired at age 44, have millions and millions worth of 'assets' and have all the free time in the world to watch his son practise soccer ...

What amazes me is the 'victims' listening to the pitch all looked pretty smart themselves. Yet - at the end, I was the only one (they hired a cinema - so it was quite a number of people) who stood up and said 'I'm not interested -cheers'

This was exactly the impression I had of the guy who invited me. He was getting screwed and was so desperate to make his money back that he didn't care who he duped and walked over just so long as he broke even. Desperate times :/

The guy who spoke to us said that society had duped us into believing that prices mattered. He said that we should buy what we love, who cares about the cost. That we should buy beautiful things because we loved them and deserved them and that by joining his company we would never need to regard prices again

Not too sure what this Amway scheme is but it sounds very familiar. A few years back we well at least my old girl was scammed. I went with to make sure that she wasn't, bad form on my part :D

Basically the scam ran like so...
Advertise in the local paper about an auction where there are guaranteed low prices on electrical goods etc. People turn up and start bidding on really cool items at unbelieable prices. People were getting Playstations and such like for less than half price. I thought... too good to be true so never bidded. My mum of course was biding her time

Last lot of the aution the guy rolls off a schpiel that there would be no bidding at all, just a chance to grab some cool stuff for £70 (not mentioning what that stuff was of course) of course the whole aution was a con making people think they were going to get some lekker stuff for £70 after all some guy got a whole new computer system for less than that earlier in the night.

He said everyone could bid by standing up, which of course my dear old mother did. They got her to fill in a form, while I was trying to tell her not to, to no avail. Anyhoo these people were then instructed to go pick up their lot on the way out.

Each and every one of the poor buggers got a gold plated watch, which to be fair looked really nice. I instructed my mum to take it to the jewelers the next day to get it evaluated. £20 is what it was worth....

The guys running the auction of course high tailed it pretty soon after. I'm led to believe, the people that bid on playstations etc were all part of the scam. They coined it though as there was about 300 people there and at a rough estimate maybe 10 people didn't pay the £70. Not a bad nights work for 10 or so people huh...

You have been warned lol.

Of course my mum has never been to another one, and my dad thinks he got spoiled for his birthday lmao. I was of course sworn to secrecy by my mum, she was too embarrased to tell my dad :D

That just sounds like an out-and-out ripoff, not a pyramid scheme :D

Ja it is a rip off however they got away with it, because it's an auction etc, there was some sort of legal loophole, which as far as I know has been patched :-)

It's very clever though...

When I was living in the US, a friend/associate from years ago would suddenly call. I would get that warm feeling that he had bothered to call after all this time and we would chat about old times, then it would come... "I have this opportunity I want to share with you...."

Complete bummer to realize he didn't give a sh*t about you. :(

I got sucked in one time. Went to this Amway presentation at a basketball arena. Big show with lights, big screens showing flashy cars, boats & houses as the speeches from top guys exhorted you to get going. It was a show. But the really interesting part was outside the arena where the hotdogs & beer were usually sold, they had put in extra banks of phones (pre cell phone days) and all these guys in suits (everyone was in a suit, except me, which drew a few looks & comments) were making their calls. Each one with an Amway filofax organizer.
