Ok, so I fell behind my timelines quite a bit with this, and will be starting seriously again from January.

If anyone else is interested in learning and lab'ing together, let me know (Jhb area).
Would be nice to get some others involved and help with the motivation etc
I have put some queries out on the actual CCIE forums, but figured I would let people here know as well

I am collecting resources and such as well, and will also post back here with progress or tips etc

Best of luck. I also will be tackling CCIE written as of next year, somehow decided that I actually need a Cisco certification, and this one at least means something.

Hi Guys,

I have my CCIE Security written already and will be preparing for the Version 4 Lab exam. So count me in..

Sweet! I will share my gns3 / vm lab in the next two weeks or so once its done.
I have pretty much everything needed except for the phones, ironport and IPS. I hear there is a way to simulate the IPS, so will be looking into that.

I also have some decent guidelines / books which i can share. I was thinking of putting up a schedule of work to go through and lab, then discuss this weekly or bi-weekly?

I might setup a central dropbox account where we can share resources and configs a little easier, let me know if anyone else has some resources or ideas.

Nice - I need to get hold of the ISE VMware image, so if you have that it would be great.
I have some notes from my CCIE v3 attempt, some of it might still be helpful, so i will share them.

I have the IPS GNS3 images for CCIE v3 only, I will look around too for the new version.

Are you using any training provider such as INE or IPExpert?

PM me your e-mail address.

Cheers,

Try get your hands on IOU, lots of the guys I know who did service provider or r&s used it to create their labs

I have the Cisco IOU if you want it :) - The only problem is I am in JHB.. its about 10GB in size.

Its pretty cool and great for R&S - pitty there isnt one for Security track :(

Good Luck. I know a brilliant Security Specialist that has failed the lab 5 times. $1400.00 per pop with flights and accommodation to Brussels. Its bloody expensive!

I am sticking to my CCIE R&S LAB exam in 2014.

Good Luck
guys make sure to join the study groups on the cisco learning networks as well. There is large amount of help there

Why in Brussels if he can do it here? Mobile labs have been available here since 2008. For anyone wanting to do the labs beginning next year, here are the current dates for the first half of the year.

Johannesburg: Jan 7 - 11
Johannesburg: May 27 - 31

Yeah I know! xD

Well when you are working for a company that doesn't mind spending the cash its a nice trip. Number of others have attended the boot camps in the US and India as well.

I dont understand it myself. It might be a personal preference as you remotely access the physical equipment with the mobile labs ( this is my understanding of it)

Study Group

Any update on the studies also need some partners to study and share content. Lab date August 15 set.

Labour of Madness .........

Power to you guys

I am still busy getting a physical lab together -- slowly slowly nearly there -- should handle up to CCNP
Whole bunch of stuff
Something like

Six switches
Access server
Six or more routers
Wireless
Some servers
Couple of other bits and pieces
( Can never have enough )

Once that is accomplished I will start on Labs -- running through lots of different scenarios and getting comfortable with the theory. ( I like working hands on )

Once it is all ready I will see about making it available -- cost of connectivity will be the problem ( all self-funded )

We have a study group with a shared drop box used to exchange info etc.
PM me for details and for anything you are looking for.

Oh, and if you are going to drop your lab date please let me know. I would like to take it.
I am writing in May, but with the current lack of materials etc I am not confident on passing, so I would like to re-do it in August.

Its cool to have physical equipment, but its just too expensive. I have managed to use a medium spec'd pc to do almost everything. For the other things im using online rack rentals, they arent too pricey

Let me prefix my statement by saying 100% physical might be best...

That being said, there is no reason why you need physical routers. It might be better, yes, but on a shoestring budget, GNS will do fine. GNS's only drawback is layer 2 emulation, so there switches will be fine. GNS + VirtualBox + couple of switches will put you well on your way as far as a lab goes.

Finishing my CCNP Security on the second of May. Then aiming for my CISSP at the end of this year, next year is CCIE Sec.

I think you can pickup some switches pretty easily. I am starting to look at building a security lab. Most of it should be done as VM's and with GNS3. I also manage an environment where I have access to ISE, ASA5585, WLC and 6509 ( that I installed the majority myself ).

Also looking at a bootcamp and study material. How is the INE's stuff?

ISE, WLC can be virtualized. The gns3 asa version is fine for studying, and you can do whatever you want on these devices without worrying about breaking something.

As for INE, there are no V4 materials released yet. The V3 stuff was not great in my opinion. It had a lot of mistakes in it, that even now havent been corrected. I havent used the VOD for INE, but I have for IPexpert, and they are pretty good.
