I was getting ready to do this, until I heard that you need to do an exam every 3 years as a retest. Is this true? If it's true and you don't do it, do you immediately lose your qualification? It's quite schitty.

Correct. You need to keep up to date. I've got mine but am not going to keep it up to date. Once your a CCNA you know all the basics.

thats correct, u need to recertify every 3 years.
u can do this by rewriting the ICND 2 exam, or by certifying again at a higher level
ie if u become a ccnp then it re certifies ur ccna as well

Yep correct. Thou if you do any current Cisco qualification all your certificates get "refreshed" - expiry date gets reset to your latest certificate.

For Eg: I did my CCNA beginning of the year, and did my CCDA 2 months ago.
Both expire 3 years time, on the CCDA's date.

i understand what ur saying, but i also disagree. Tech/best practices/standards can easily change within 3 years, which is why i am quite a fan of the recert process. I also love the fact they are now doing forensic analysis on the exams done, hopefulyl will help stop ppl brain dumping and getting ridiculous ccna pass scores...then u ask them to do simple packet / frame inspection and u get a blank look...

Why would you care, normaly you would look at getting ccnp etc as ccna is just an entry point into cisco qualifications.

If you get to CCIE level you have to re certify every 2 years

Yeah, the above is correct. I just finished my CCNP a few days ago, it is the new one they offer (v5.0)... and is actually quite different from v3.0... around 35% different content apart from technology and protocol updates.

The recertification process does help to keep you at the top of your game, so I for one cannot disagree with the whole thing... and the courses don't take long either. I did mine in 9 days (from scratch).

Thanks. I do agree that it is good because it keeps one up to date with the newer technologies, but I'm just one of those people who wants to study once and have it for good :o
But in any case, I think I'm gonna go for it. I wanna get into security.

I'd also rather do it once and never again, but that defeats the purpose of being up to date in a qualified manner. If you are doing this for work purposes they should pay for all the certifications (which does go into the several thousands...).

I want to get out of this job I'm currently in, so I'll be doing it out of my own. I have the study material. I'll just need to learn it and pay for the exams. Are there 2 exams for CCNA?

there are two exams or one combo exam...do the combo...
there is also a ccna security exam, which u need a valid ccna to do..

just a side note, if ur really wanting to get into serious IT, u have the wrong attitude towards studying. Unfortuantely ur going to have to study all the time, be updated ALL THE TIME!! Otherwise ur going to sit being a sys admin for 20 users hoping their exchange breaks.

Yes, the single exam option is better. More material to study, but what the heck.
The one side-effect about being into any computer-related direction is having to keep updated with the technology. A friend of mine is a .net developer and his company requires him to do 4 certifications a year (or update certs).

I'm also in the security field and don't deal too much with networks. The CCNA is a good cert to have though and you get to learn the basics of subnetting, routing etc etc. All of this is usefull for the security field.

I keep up to date with all my other certs though - you need to constantly keep up to date as technology keeps changing and you have to keep ahead of the field.

Subnetting is a crucial part of any network situation. If at any stage you need to keep routing tables small (with summaries) or design networks with maximum size/ keeping address waste to a minimum, your subnetting skills need to be top notch. CCNA I remember hammers that into you quite well. CCNP builds up a lot on CCNA too though, which would also be a good choice later on.

Do any of you guys have some actual test papers with answers for CCENT and CCNA for me? I'm almost at the end of the CCENT course.

@gregmcc: Did you do the CCSP/CCNP or the CCNA security course? Is it lucrative and are there many job opportunities for that?

You can find braindumps/test questions fairly easily if u search torrent sites etc.

The security market is fairly lucrative, just go to pnet and search for security engineer, however most places require a fair amount of real world experience. I dont deal with the cisco side much (i do more checkpoint) but i would say the opportunities for cisco are high (fortigate seems to be coming through well now though).

Yeah, I searched Usenet but couldn't find anything. Newzleech is messed up lately and I don't use torrents. Thanks for the info.
