We had this problem where our hosts use a 3750 for dhcp, but if they were on VLAN10 would get the gateway for VLAN20, All other settings were fine. Oh, and it only happened on IP phones.

After much investigation, it turned out that some numb nuts connected a little 4 port switch to 2 access ports on different vlans on the same switch.

Had something similar once, using a sniffer to trace packets localised the problem pretty quickly after looking up some addresses.

On a properly designed network one should rarely encounter a problem unless it's power, link or hardware related with strict rules for staff that do have access to the network (and have logs), but occasionally some idiot techie will plug something in to a switch that's configured with a gateway address etc :D

So Ive decided to take the leap of faith and hop on over to networking which I have suddenly developed a keen interest in. I do not have any formal experince but willing to compensate that with hands on training via a Cisco certified training institution and the likes. I've gone through the 74+ threads on this topic but most are old, so I need help with updated info on simulations and videos that i can get hold of, if you have any material please pm me or post here....any help and advise, please id appreciate that

If you don't come right then come and chat to me -i'm in the process of putting a LAB together

For everyone that want study materials for CCNA and CCNP I would HIGHLY recommend Train Signal CCNA & CCNP.

Sorry for derailing but does anyone know about some decent training materials in Juniper Networks?

I'm writing my JNCIA next wednesday and I'm thinking of doing my JNCIS early next year. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys

problem for me with ccna is that the certificate only lasts 3 years. I'd better get a decent job as a networking professional if I am to re write the exam every 3 years. >.>

you dont have to re-write the exam specifically. You can re-certify a lower exam by writing a higher level one

So CCNA, CCNP, CCIE.

Once you reach P level you are kinda fooked as the next higher level would be CCIE once you have done that you have to recertify every 2 years unless you see yourself doing a CCA which also requires a CCDE. Certification is a money making racket, it's not like the entire networking field changes in 2-3 years. Yes there are some new developments but it does not justify an entire recertification.

not entirely accurate, you can recertify a current level qualification with a qualification in the same level but different field.

I agree with you on re-certs though. I think the CCNA should have to be re-done. But once you reach professional level, you should get a 5 year grace period.
Although, the re-certification exams are apparently not that bad.

Join your local WUG.
It might not be Cisco, but at least you'll get to exercise the theory.

Yes, aware of that one. thing that grates my ass is so you certify in a different field so they automatically update your old cert but the new cert does not mean you are proficient in the one it just automatically recertified :D Follow my logic? That's why I reckon it's a racket, they just want the money. Imagine everybody that did a B.Sc having to redo exams every 10yrs to keep it valid, madness I tell you :D I see Juniper requires recerts every 2yrs or when they decide something has come to an end.

This is not unusual, same thing happens in the world of risk management(insurance) guys are always required to keep up and step up so we are not alone.
