I went out today and bought myself a cell c speed stick. When I got home to Howick I was surprised to find that it would only connect to EDGE. I thought this was rather strange so I checked the cell c coverage map and sure enough there has been a huge reduction in the area that is covered around howick etc. Has anyone else noticed this yet? Can anyone from cell c give a reason as to what is going on.

I had checked the coverage map more than 20 times over the last few weeks and it was the same every time - even 2 or 3 days ago - but today it has shrunk dramatically.

The coverage maps are generated using software. It could well be that there was some missing terrain or buildings when it was initially generated. If the terrain changes then it will have to compensate. There is also the possibility that they lost a site which was previously covering your area.

Why don't you Tell Trevor? Apparently this service works quite well. They've really beefed up customer service. Alternatively ask on the Cell C Facebook Page, they do actually follow up on complaints and queries.

I wish Vodacom, Telkom and MTN would implement something like this, and overhaul their whole customer service department.

I think i might just tell Trevor. It seems to me like one of the towers has gone offline as there was a very large circular area on the map eminating from a high point near howick and that whole area is just completely not covered any more.

I have said for a while now that the coverage maps are far too optomistic. I was in Howick / midmar two weeks ago and their was no sign of any 3G only edge.

Edit:

Looked at the "new" map, which now seems to fairly acurately correlate with coverage as i have found it driving around.

Cell C's coverage in Meadowridge, Cape Town is pathetic. Don't waste you money

Notice the coverage in Hillcrest area has also been reduced on the map. Went to cell c at the pavillion on friday to buy a package. The sales guy asked me where I lived I said Hillcrest, he said the coverage in Hillcrets is not that Great gave me a free sim card with R10 airtime on told me to test the connection before I bought. Thought that was cool and just as well as I only get edge at home...
