Cell C 3G hands-on

True. That is what they announced as well. You can also activate 3G on the previoulsly bought sim cards. You can not just use them with out activation and except 3G speeds.
Is there any user who bought the new bundle or activated 3G on thier sim who can give us the feed back?

their support staff are useless.

i called their call centre to see if i need to activate my 3G on my sim or something and the staff have no idea what im talking about. i think they lack the training to know what the difference between gprs, edge and 3G is.... ( their solution to the problem is "set your prefered network on your phone to 3G ). which ofcourse was the first thing i tried long before i called them, not to mention i tried both sim cards in a 7.2MBPS dongle which is compatible with new cell-c network.

i have 2 cell-c sim cards. ( 1 on mychat 100 contract ) and ( one prepaid ) and both only pick up edge. the one i got recently so it is a black 128k sim card. still only edge.

then i have my MTN sim card which is tied to a MTN data bundle contract. < - this one works with hsdpa without problems ...

thriel, looked at your speedtest - surely you can adjust your settings (change from Automatic to Cell C, perhaps, if you've not done so) to pick up signals in PE. Your speed test shows JHB. I don't know much about this, but if you were able to pick up signals in PE (more directly), then you might get the relevant speeds. Just a suggestion.

So you think somebody in PE can connect to a Tower in JHB?

WTF are you on about ?

im not connected to a tower in JHB. when you do a speed test it just sends a packet to JHB and back to PE. that isnt the tower im connected to, its where the speed test is testing.

When the hell did I say your were connected to a tower in JHB?

It looks to me like BBSA was replying to a slightly confused-sounding post by BayCityRoller that gives the impression BCR thinks your speeds might've been slow because you were 'picking up signals from Jhb' i.e. implying 'connected to a Jhb tower', on the basis that your speedtest shows the name Joburg in it (i.e. confusing an IP connection to Joburg layered over a cell network through the PE tower, with a cell connection to a Joburg tower). If you were connecting to a Jhb tower it would certainly explain your slow speeds ;) .. but obviously there isn't a hope in hell of actually connecting to Joburg towers from PE on 900MHz unless you have some serious amplifying and receiving equipment on both sides, and, probably, are bouncing signals off the moon or some kind of satellite or something.

Please sign in, any member of the public who is using cellc 3g???
Is it PE only so far?
Anybody who is accessing 3G on an existing SIM? How do you activate it?

it aint live yet, and if it is its K@K slow...

ya, that's 1 test

they have an average of 12.42 in Jhb (click on Joburg)

got the R1500 for 2gb a month at 7,2mbs

not getting anywhere near advertised speeds.
all this hype and marketing is exactly that, when i went to the greenacres branch they demoed the 21mbps package, they ran a speed test which showed 8mbps local, i asked the guy to do a international test and he looked at me like i was mad, he did it and got 4mbps

still a bargain for the price

Is the latency okay? Do Youtube movies play smoothly without you having to wait for it to buffer?

Thanks!

I'm guessing the Cell C support centre thought you were useless likewise. To use the damn 4G network, you have to buy into their offering (which means, unfortunately, shelling out a lot of money in blind faith), and then you'll be able to connect on 3G+ speeds.

If you had bothered to do your homework, you'd realise that the new 4G network is data-only; Cell C still has a way to go before they optimise their 900Mhz frequency for voice as well as data traffic. In the interim, data users can make use of the new network, while those who use their sims for voice calls will have to wait a while, possibly even to next year for any developments.

And honestly, don't blame the call-centre staff for your lack of intelligence. They're not technicians, they're not geeks, they're just normal people doing their best to give you solutions and answers.

latency is pretty good, depending on your area obviously, but in the newton park area it loads you tube pretty quick, quicker than it plays.

i would say its on par with my 4mb adsl line, maybe a touch quicker at times
but nowhere near 7.2 and to say its a 21mbps line is just a joke.

don't get me wrong, im very happy with the product
and the service i got was brilliant when i bought it
but don't buy it expecting mind blowing 21mbps speeds on their new amazing "4G" network

they can spend all they want on marketing and a new image but cell c is still cell c

Was ready to get myself 2GB bundle, but HP4510s built-in hsdpa modem not compatible with 900Mhz Cell C using. Those using, which modem you using?
Would like to get a list compatible modems except those listed on CellC website.
