Cell C begins moving customers off its network

....while at the same time applying for spectrum....
Yep does not make sense that Cell C threw its hat into ICASA's ITA ring.

And what does Cell C intend to put up as collateral whilst bidding in the spectrum auction?

They’ll be using their own spectrum on the MTN network...
Or more precisely, Cell C would be giving MTN permission to provision some (in stages) of the spectrum licensed to Cell C, to be used on MTN towers.

I tried connecting on MTN but it failed. So I don't know if it's only by invitation or only for certain areas.

In 2010, Cell-C was forced to sell their towers assets to ATC (American Tower Corporation), and then rented capacity from ATC.

I suspect MTN is just cheaper to use than ATC.
That's just the towers and tower space. They will decomission their radio equipment and simple use MTN's radio network, I think they still keeping their core and billing infrastructure. MTN is using Cell C's spectrum

Am I correct in thinking that by enabling roaming on my phone, it will then use my airtime for internet-related things like browsing and WhatsApp? (Mine is permanently set to use ONLY wi-fi for internet.)

No. Will still use wifi
Fantastic, thanks! But then if I'm not able to use wi-fi (e.g. I go out somewhere), will it then change to use my airtime? At the moment, the way I have it set up, if there is no wi-fi, the internet and WhatsApp, etc. just won't work (else it chows airtime like crazy).

The same settings should apply when roaming as on normal data

So you have mobile data turned off. Roaming won't override that.

Well I guess you can only go up from here.....
