Cell C Cape Town launch on 30th September

Cell C '4GS' coverage in Cape Town and Wireless GSM/Sim card modem

Hi guys

What speeds are you getting in Cape Town on Cell C's new 4GS offering? Anyone in Greenpoint/Seapoint?

Also does anyone have insight into getting a wireless modem where you can put the Cell C sim card in so a few devices can connect to the 4GS internet in my flat? Pricing? Does the modem act as an external antenna as well if the signal is bad?

To many questions - sorry. Just trying to get my head around waiting 1-2 months for Telkom/Mweb adsl VS getting this new Cell C offering at a fraction of the price. I don't need uncapped but need solid internet asap.

I know its not really a 4G network - but from what Ive heard the speeds are decent?

You just get a 3G router such as a Netgear MBR624GU or Dovado MBR, plug in your Cell C modem and off you go (may need to update router firmware first for the new Cell C modems - I have had to do that on a MBR624 GU, Dovado MBR and AirLive Air3G routers).

A few basic setup parameters need to be entered for the router.

My speeds with Cell C are much faster than 4mbps ADSL - YMMV !

Yeah, that's fine (I have one) but there are newer ones that are more up-to-date, such as the AirLive Air3G (http://www.zapsonline.com/42633-air...ports-150mbps-wireless-3g-router-imair3g.html) and Dovado 4GR (http://www.dovado.com/Routers.html)

But the Netgear works great, just does not have Wireless N, that is if any of your devices even support that - you probably don't need that.
 
download firmware from manufacturer's website and log into the router and go to the update firmware section, then browse for the firmware file on your pc and upload.
 
Follow instructions in user manual for setup :

Basic :
1) Type default IP number in browser (usually 192.168.0.1)
2) Login using defaults
3) Change administrator password (some random name construction)
4) Set wireless network name (eg MyNetwork)
5) Select WPA2 Personal security and choose a password (eg Table69Mountain)
6) Set it up for Cell C : APN = internet, No = *99#
7) Save & reboot
8) Plug in Cell C modem & connect wirelessly from your phone / Kindle / netbook, etc.

You can do more security if you wish, but that is the minimum.
