Cell C Cape Town launch on 30th September

yeah, if anyone has been able to connect their ps3's to the internet just by plugging the dongle into the usb slot on the console, please let us know! in the article he says 'plugged it into the back of their playstations' - aren't the usb slots on the front?!

I think that's just the built-up areas. You can verify this by switching from Map to Terrain view, or switching the coverage overlays off.

(I'm currently unable to switch off 4Gs overlay in the Cape Town region, but it works in Port Elizabeth, could be caching?)
 
Ah well, will try the device out when it's activated (was told not to try it out until tomorrow). But it's looking promising, will try to set up an online game and see how that goes.
 
I'm on with it right now. Got a promotional launch dongle too. Here's a speedtest.
 
So am I correct in saying that existing customers/other phone contract customers will not get the new speeds? Seems to be a huge slap in the face to me... Been a Cell C customer for 5 years, and have been waiting for Cell C 3G forever - when I heard it was coming it was pretty much the only reason I didn't cancel my contract! And now I'm stuck with EDGE and R2.00 per MB :(
 
I'm sitting with a similar problem, bought a cell c starter pack, hoping that it will allow me to check if I have 3G cover at home, but the prepaid sim only allow EDGE.

Hi morkhans

The coverage map should be updated after each respective press conference. The press launches tend to be at around 10am, so when you see us launching, you should wait till around noon to see the new map.

morkhans, you're correct. The darker the red the spot, the stronger the coverage in that area.

On that note, a few people have asked us to change the colour, since they seem to find it hard to distinguish between the 4Gs red and the 2G lighter red.
What do you guys think? If you agree, which colour would you prefer to make it more clearly distinguishable?
 
Use the colors from your logo:
e.g.
GPRS: Blue
2G: Yellow
4Gs low freq: Red
4Gs high freq: Black

Sorry about that. We've never meant to seem unappreciative to you or our other Cell C customers. Unfortunately, for us to be able to provide this service at this low price, the rollout has had to start in this fashion. Consider getting yourself one of the new data packages - else, be patient and we'll rollout cross-network 4Gs coverage to all customers as soon as it's possible.

I think 2 distinct colours might be a good idea. You can however use the legend to select the visible coverage areas. So I can't see it as being the end of the world.

What would be more useful to me is being able to zoom down further. I suspect there are pockets without coverage that are not showing because you can't zoom deep enough.
 
Anyone using Cell C 3G in Claremont/Rondebosch/Kenilworth area with decent speeds?
 
I'm in Rondebosch East and getting speeds of about 3.6Mbps

Went to work in Claremont and tried it out and I think I got about 5Mbps.
 
Heya Guys can anyone give some feedback about this service when used with online gaming via PS3 or Xbox360 xbox live ?

Im really keen on changing over to this, but i've heard horror storys about gaming on wireless internet.
 
hey deathadder. i'm down in durbs and will be getting the data sim within the next day. i've got a ps3 and xbox 360 and will test the service on both. i'll create a new thread on the forum as soon as i've done this, so keep a lookout for that! cheers.

Thanks for the response.

I guess that makes sense in terms of network capacity for now... What is more important to me (and I'm sure many others) at this point than the 3G speed is the data rates - please consider lowering that base R2.00 per meg for out of bundle and prepaid usage... It is clearly a rip-off, and there is absolutely no way in hell that price is justified (same goes for the other networks too btw).

Spending R50 a month for my phone to check my email (and some VERY light browsing) is just not right!

So what does this mean - i get a data sim now and then have two sim cards, which I need to switch in and out of my phone - one to make calls and one for data - that sucks.
