Hi Guys

Ok so i got a Cell C contract last week. Im appalled by the service, the Internet, the support, the signal, everything. I cant do half the things i need to do on my phone for work. Long story short, i hate cell c and i want to cancel my contract. Can one do this or am i stuck for the full 24 months?

Its only been a week man. Give them a chance. Have your query escalated to a superior.

My apologies.

Well my main concern is the INTERNET. I was assured the day i went to apply for the contract that the Cell C network is running and stable and that i wont have any issues regarding the internet service. However im getting download speeds of maybe MAYBE 10kb/s and this is annoying because i need to log in to remote computers, connect with the exchange and check web pages for the better part of the entire day. I explained this to the oke working at cell c and he said no its no problem, however i cant manage to do ALMOST anything on the Internet, i know my phone does not have 3G and uses edge but the speed should still be well over 100kb/s if im not mistaken (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/103315-edge-speed)

I know that nowhere in the contract it says that "if the cell c agent lied to you may you cancel your contract) but im seriously irritated with the service. Yesterday i phoned in for them to check why my internet is so slow and the guy ended up turning my Internet off completely and im still struggling to have them correct the problem =/

And i dont care that they are "upgrading their network" because to be honest it doesn't look like anything is happening. I live in Pretoria and if the network in Pretoria, which is a large city with many of their users sucks so much, what will it be like in smaller places? TBH with vodacom i can drive down to Durban and have 3g 80% of the time but with cell c i have to stand outside my house to get a decent edge signal.

Thus i am inquiring if i can cancel my contract or port to prepaid or something.

EDGE usually runs at about 236.8kbps (kilobits per second) max-ish. That is about ~30 KB/s (Kilo Bytes per second). That is IF there is enough time slots available on your specific tower, IF you have good reception, IF the tower is not overloaded, if if if if. You see where I'm going with this?

Ah. You see. Signal quality - it matters.

Well, you signed a contract for a service. If they cannot provide said service, they are in breach of contract - valid ground to have a contract canceled. But they won't just *bam* cancel it. I think you'll need to work with them to first try and see why your reception in pta is not sufficient. Why don't you get a R400 HSDPA dongle (or a friend's) and check how the performance is with that?

If it is within 2 weeks you can cancel the contract. They wont do it without a fight but the law states that you have a "cooling down" time of 2 weeks.New legislation is being passed to make this time 30 days.

I assume you meant you are getting 10kbits/sec. That's really crap. Try using Vodacom towers? Do this by going into Network Settings and there setting the network manually to Vodacom. You still won't be able to use 3G, even with a 3G phone, but maybe you can come closer to a few hundred kbit/sec. But it will still "feel" slow due to the high latency on GPRS/EDGE.

No Actually, when i select vodacom, or when it goes over to vodacom by itself, i dont have internet access at all =/

@ Rico, how sure are you about the 2 week cooling down period?

Thats is law,any contract you sign you have the right to cancel as the law gives you 2 week "cooling off" time.
They will try to force you but that counts for everybody. You will be liable for some amount.
I signed contract last year with well known gym, after giving is some thought i decided i wont have time to go to gym.
Long story short they tried to force me and said nothing i can do,send them a nice letter stating the cool off time and that i have the right to cancel it.
Well anyway contract was cancelled.
Think not everyone knows about it,so people get forced into things that they could have stopped.
Next year when the time will be 30 days it will even be better.

I'm pretty sure most consumer contracts have that 14 day grace period. but best make use of it NOW. Dont wait till tomorrow, go to them and say you arent happy with the service, they've tried to resolve it but havent been able to, Cell C just isnt for you. How were you supposed to know the signal at your house would be so crap?

Get ADSL.

I have got ADSL at home but im on the road a lot and as i said i need to rmotely connect to computers etc etc. I will go to the shop where i got the contract during my lunch time and hear what they have to say. Does anyone know where i can get some information about this grace/cooling off period so i can show the people the documentation, because im pretty sure they wont allwo me to cancel my contract based on word of mouth only. Phew luckily the contract is only 1 week old :P
