I'm actually on FNB connect which is using the cell C network. During load shedding I get a zero data speed whereas my housemate on MTN just gets a slower speed but still usable. Is this a cell C thing?

Its a cell c thing.
I have a sim from each of cell c, mtn and vodacom

Cell c lasts for about 5 mins into load shedding
Mtn lasts for just under an hour
Vodacom lasts the full 4 hours - its just very pricey

Thank you for the reply but it's not just my network at home. For example I went to Midrand today, about 60 km from where I live. There was a power outage in the area and also zero data signal.

This is a common thing. In Pietermaritzburg i travel all around town and as far as ashburton and when there is loadshedding the signal drops to zero. We did notice that for a few months the Home connecta lte was doing fine in the ashburton area, but as of the last few weeks, zero signal on lte as well. Also dont believe their maps. Cell c uses virtual networking off other cell tower eg vodacom.
