It could also be that automatic updating maybe switched on so the app store is picking up the data and updating your apps in the background without you knowing. You will need to check in your app store or settings on your phone for automatic updating.
There could also be apps running in the background using the data to update, eg Facebook, Twitter etc, etc.....
Also, check your data usage to see which app is using the most data.

I deleted all my social media apps ages ago. about the only thinig I do using data is play one game, and I know how much data it uses, which is minimal. however, I did as you said, and checked app data. imagine my surprise to find my launcher used half a gig of data, which is has never done before. FML
