Cell C HSPA+ population coverage reaches 63%

With only HSPA+ and 42Mbps selected, the map shows this:

That doesn't look like 63% to me, or am I missing something? :confused:

Edit: And yes I know it says population coverage. Still doesn't look like 63% of people covered in those bits.
True it doesn't but as they said they use different signal measures for population coverage and the coverage map

Cell C's coverage decisions seem arbitrary to say the least. One of the posters above is quite happy to have access in Pofadder, for heavens' sake, yet in one of South Africa's fastest-growing cities according to official statistics, Rustenburg, nothing. Is tower planning done with a blindfold and a pin?

Perhaps they haven't been able to secure an adequate site(s) in Rustenberg?
 
Congrats to Cell C for the excellent work in rolling out their national network. I think it is quite an achievement in such a short space of time and in the long term they should benefit quite well from it financially which would make the remainder of their roll-out sustainable.
 
Are they going to bring 3G on the 2100MHz band on tower ID 23233 in the next few months, or should I switch to Vodacom?

I'm with CellC, with 90% reception, and a max download speed of 25kb/s.

The bundles work out about 4x cheaper than VC (Slightly cheaper bundle prices, plus the insane amounts of free data you get per bundle-sized recharge), which is why I stay, even with ludicrously slow speeds... (Common 800+ pings to google.co.za, page timeouts, and IRC disconnects)

When D3 gets released, I'm going back to Vodacom to play with decent speeds (Until I can afford an E1820 that is, but I don't have R1,500 on me right now)

Oh, and the inability to receive incoming connections is annoying as well (Their testing is closed, and will most likely possibly be implemented next year sometime... maybe)

I get a 236k connection :p A mere 4 times faster than Dial-Up (You know, the old R7 capping and such, where you played online Warcraft 2? Those speeds!)

Wonder why?

Also note; One networks's 63% does not necessarily equals another network's 63%.

Measuring at -105dB means you are using a signal level nearly 4 times 'weaker' than another network measuring at -100dB.

63% at -105 could easily be 30% (or less) at -100.

No, but there should be. Though many operators do use the same measure, the lack of formal standards allows for 'creative' usage of terms and numbers. A bit like calling 3G technology, 4G. ;)

Is this not a typical example of what the ICASA should define and the ASA monitor when used in advertisements?
 
Do you? What do you measure it with? Do you get that close to the window or is a average for your house? Vodacom is a dying dinosaur. The time of the little mamals is near :D clearly their outdated and poorly maintained network, can not handle the amount of users needed to meaningfull compete. Hence keep the price high and limit the number (and profits)

Using your analogy then Cell C is also a dinosaur when compared to 8ta.

MTN and Vodacom are way ahead of the other 2; they just don't make a big song and dance about every little installation they complete.

Use MDMA to get the signal strength.

Average for the house. Best I get is -57.

Though I (like a lot of others here) am unhappy about Vodacom's data pricing, they're far from becoming extinct.
