  • Got iPhone 5 Jan 2012
  • Great phone
  • No Reception at home in Big Bay Cape Town.
  • Had the same issue with MTN - MTN Technician confirmed that there is a reception issue where i live - This contract was subsequently CANCELLED and written off by Altech Autopage
  • CELL C Technician confirmed there is no reception where I live.
  • I left MTN and moved to CELLC due to Reception issues
  • Now cellc is saying there is NOTHING that they can do
  • I have been handed over to their legal department due to non payment - why pay for something that you do not get?
  • They have blacklisted me for non payment = due to their inability to provide a service.
  • I have recently gotten a Vodacom Sim - Reception is perfect!
  • Looks like another fight with the cell phone mafia and their bullying tactics.
  • I am so sick of it.
I have received a letter of demand for the outstanding fees for the handset and the last month I had access to their network.
I have requested them to investigate this matter from their side and since June 2013 I have had NO RESPONSE.
What do you guys suggest I do?:confused::confused:

Did you have reception and then it stopped? Your post is not very clear.
Why did you not check reception before signing up. If you failed to do that, you can't blame them.

I fail to understand the problem when you where told "NO RECEPTION". Also, when do you sign a contract for a new network without testing it out on prepaid?

A contract is a contract. You have a responsibility to check that you have reception in your area before signing up for a contract with a provider.

If you are on CellC, why don't you lock in Vodacom as your network? AFAIK you should be able to roam on Vodacom - not so?

I had a Cell C contract and while there is reception where I live, it gradually got worse to the point that I couldn't get online or even send an sms.

I contacted them and got the usual BS from people that know nothing and decided to make a complaint at hellopeter.com
within 2 days the regional manager contacted me and I got a partial refund. Basically they refunded me for 6 months even though i had the contract for 11 months. I'm still smiling as it was only the last 4 months that I could't use it all.

However, if you took out a contract without paying 99c for a sim card and check the signal yourself or at the very least get a sim from a friend or relative to check it out then whose fault is it really? Yours or Cell C? I'm inclined to think it's yours.

Remember that those guys behind the desk in Joburg that you phoned for the contract have no idea where you are or whether or not you have signal in your area and even if you tell them where you live they can't be bothered to check reception in your area. That onus lies on you.

But i'm sure that if you explained it to them they will refund you and i think all you will need to pay is the shipping fee of delivery and return of the cellphone.

If they don't, you can always submit a report on Hellopeter.com
They respond fairly quickly and the "customer relations officers" that are in charge of handling that department are a lot more eager to please and almost seem to genuinely care about your problem. If only the ones at the customer help line were half as courteous and friendly.

Just promise you will get a prepaid sim from vodacom or a friend and really check your signal before you get yet another contract.

as MagicDude4Eva pointed out: Cell C have a national roaming agreement with Vodacom. So where there is vodacom reception, you will be able to use Cell C.

Check your cellphone settings and turn roaming on if it is off. If it is already on and it still isn't working then you can do a manual network search and connect to the vodacom tower that way.
If there is vodacom reception - there will undoubtedly be Cell C. Therefor you cannot use "no reception" as a means of getting out of a contract and you will have to pay up.

It does not matter what some useless Cell C tech said "CELL C Technician confirmed there is no reception where I live."
You might have misinterpreted his meaning. He could have meant that Cell C does not have a tower in that area, but since you pointed out that there is a Vodacom signal, a Cell C tower isn't necessary as they roam on the Vodacom network.

Hope that helps in any way.

You would have to speak to CellC about cancelling the contract due to no signal - there are penalty fees for cancelling but if its due to no signal then they may waive these - it just depends who you speak to. However, you will still have to pay for the phone component of the contract - as you received the phone. You can't just stop paying all together!!?? Your credit rating will be blacklisted and you'll struggle to get credit in future.

Definitely. There must be something wrong with phone or settings. Is your phone locked to LTE? LTE use voice over data, but Cell C data agreement is limited to 2G - it result no signal when roaming through Vodacom using LTE. Before stopping payments I would check coverage using ordinary R100 phone or R200 3G phone.

Re: iPhone 5. What is your carrier version? Go to the Settings - General -About. Also select Automatic network selection and disable LTE for testing. Use fresh new LTE compatible prepaid SIM, as your contract service had been undoubtly suspended.

Prepaid seems a lot more stable than contract when it comes to the data issues. My gf is on Cell C prepaid with an iPhone and never has data issues.
