Cell C sets new mobile data pricing standard

Those tables may confuse readers - the monthly amount is the lump sum divided by 24 so as to show monthly cost.

There is NO monthly cost after purchasing the GB package upfront.

and not to mention their ridiculous topup tariffs

R390 per GB, that is part of the new bundle, the prepaid topup is still R1500 per GB, its very f@cking steep.

surely you can stick to 5gb a month...? or buy two data sims and you can get 10gb a month for about R320.

You could purchase that with a Credit card and repay over a 12 month term. The interest would be negligible.

Looking forward to Vodacom/MTN to respond. Unfortunately I'm locked into contracts for the company.

Doubt if these two monsterss would like too many contract customers to try CellC. :)

pay R2K upfront ? without any knowledge of how their service will be over the next 12 months ?

Exactly, that's pretty insane. Especially judging from Cell C's service over the last few years.

The new topup rate hasn't bet released yet. My guess is they are waiting to see what the average usage will be. If most peeps use their allotment long before the end of the month, they won't be able to set the topup rate too low, as average usage will then likely jump to between 5-10 gigs causing the network to become sluggish.

But on the other hand if average usage is 500 megs they will be able to drop the topup price a lot lower.

So calm down and take a chill pill.

Well that's the thing.

The pricing model is very interesting - a once off payment for 12 months is a unique way of buying data. But paying in ahead of time means that you're not free to cancel later - you've paid for the data, you might as well use it.

There's also no indication of the quality of the service yet or how good the coverage will be. It's tempting, but also risky. Cell C have been terrible in the past - and paying for something upfront without any indication of what you'll be getting isn't making sense to me.

Reliability: no mobile operator is in a position to guarantee performance. The legal term is, best endeavours. Did you notice Vodacom or MTN guaranteeing you 7.2?

The 7 day trial should enable most people to ascertain signal strength and performance. If you don't get good speeds, then you get a refund.

Ongoing performance; well you can always moan to Trevor. :)

For those with UMTS 900 modems (latest smart phones etc) you can also test the network on normal PAYG. (although I note my own TouchPro2 whilst supporting 900 maxes out at 7.2) :(

I wonder if you are able to link that to your phone contract.Having an iphone it would be awesome knowing you can do what ever you want with it :) Or all I will do is buy the prepaid 2GB and buy a mifi :) then I can link my ipad, laptop and iphone to it on the go!

I love Cell C ATM but hate the Trevor stunt!

Silly question

Huawei E220(Vodafone E220)

E220 ModemSpecifications

* HSDPA/UMTS 2100MHz and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900 MHz

So cant I use the E220 Modem on the cell c network according its specs? as the network supports UMTS 900MHz and the modem only supports UMTS 2100MHz

my past experience with cell-c is utterly crap. their edge is so slow most of the website you try open times out. i wouldnt trust them far as i can throw them. the best thing to do before you buy any kind of bundle from them is to sit back and watch it all play out. if in 6 to 12 months time you are happy with what you see then go for it... but from reputation most likely you wont be happy with what you see ...

They have a compatibility list...

You can use GPRS / EDGE / whatever GSM the offer at 900MHz but not 3G (UMTS)...

900MHz UMTS maks sense.. 900MHz travel a lot better though walls and around obstacles than 2.1GHz and it should get rid of a lot of the 30cm wtake you from full signal to no signal sometimes found with 3G...

Nope - not on the list:

However if you don't care about speed:

Benefits

* HSPA+ 900 transmitter technology allows as much as 5 times larger coverage
* HSPA+ 900 allows much better coverage indoors, so you can surf and call from your home and office
* HSPA+ 900 allows for more than double the throughput at the cell edge than UMTS 2100
* Our HSPA+ 900 network is complemented by additional 2100 coverage in areas where extra capacity is needed.

Well as you are in PE what are you seeing?

I wonder what CellC's reception in areas such as Krugersdorp will be. If any good, I am getting rid of vodacom!
