Cell C Straight Up versus Vodacom Smart Plans

It will be less hassles when you change to prepaid on MTN first. Last year I did that by phoning 808. The change to prepaid occurred within one day. But wait a day or two after so that their billing system has time to reflect the change. Otherwise the port may fail.

I think it's time to move from MTN anytime 200 (R200 + R80 for 100mb) to cellc straight up 100 (R100 with 100mb)... Don't care about sms's. CellC's site says to port I just need to buy a prepaid sim and then sms some stuff through to them from my current sim. Surely I'd need to let MTN know though? (my contract expired 2months ago)

I would also like to know if it is possible to port your number to another provider while you have an existing contract. I also want to port away from MTN (really poor network) to Vodacom.

What is with all the retarded smoke & mirrors with the stupid idea of on-net minutes ? I hate it, keep it simple. Even MTN's anytime contracts are more straightforward, even though they might be more expensive.

I will also let my wallet do the talking when my MTN contract expires, if MTN haven't improved on CellC's packages, I will port to CellC. Their straight-up contracts are absolutely brilliant.

Best way to go is to go prepaid for a couple of days and then port. It just takes one day to port and your destination provider to everything.
When I did it from MTn to Voda it cost me a cool R3 for the Vodacom sim. No need to inform MTN you're going to port.
Prepaid is king, you can go wherever whenever

I ported to Cell C from MTN. On Straight up 100 - 1 Month. Bought the Galaxy 3 for R7200.
This works out to average of R400pm over 24 months. Cheaper than Cell C's Straight Up 100 with Galaxy 3 and with the added bonus of no contracts. My data speed is much faster than mtn's in johannesburg and voice seems better too.

Think so, i signed up for a top-up 50, asked for month to month and my contract became active on friday

Vodacom TopUp 400s - this is interestingly enough probably still one of your best bets to get the Galaxy S3 on:

R570pm including 250MB

So you can use R100 to buy another 250MB then you have 500MB per month.
That leaves R300pm to make phone calls with, which is probably an average of around 120 anytime minutes.

It's not bad but I hate the lack of transparency with the tariff's and call rates. Cell C straight up you know what a minute costs always. Guestimating how many minutes a tariff includes is not for me. All networks, per second same rate. That's transparent. With a little imagination you can get something similar on cell c. R100 for 250MB + R200 for 200MB and 200 minutes = 300. Galaxy 3 can be had for R6800 with discovery about R283pm. 300+283 = R583pm and you have 80 minutes more pm. Transparent rates and month to month. Data is 450MB but close enough.
The other option is take the Straight up 100 and add a 500MB bundle for 150. So 250+283=R533pm.

Actually I was told that the 1 month is a 30 day notice contract. So after the first month the contract just keeps renewing for a month.

I've been with Cell C, Virgin Mobile and now MTN. Every time I've changed, I looked at and was always put off by Vodacom's bundled minutes. I did not and do not like to be dictated to as to how much of my airtime should be used for speaking. They always add the extra sms's and data to your bill.

Vodacom have gone and done the same thing again, predetermined how much you spend should be for voice calls. MTN's Anytime and now Cell C's Straight Up, at least allow the flexibility to spend left-over airtime on data or sms's. Sorry Vodacom, you'll not be for me.
