So I get an unsolicted call from Cell C offering me a two free cellphones deal and when I ask them "why me?" They say because I'm a high airtime Vodacom subscriber.

How does one say F* Off in a language that Cell C understands? What on earth makes them think that sane people would willingly downgrade their service levels for a measly two phone deal?

I too get those calls from Cell C but from MTN as well. Then I tell them that I'm actually from Zimbabwe. Thats the best way to shut them up without being rude. Oh and sometimes my little daughter of 2 years wants to speak to them.

I received a call like that "on behalf of cell c" saying I won a awesome new phone.

Now knowing how these creeps operate I acted all surprised and asked the lady to tell me in detail what the phone is like and all that.

After about 15 minutes she really thought she had a sale here and all I needed to do was confirm where I work so they can send me the phone.

At that point I told here exactly what I thought of her and telemarketing...

Shame, I actually feel sorry for her.

You guys are better

I applied for a contract with Cell C, just to get the phone of course, then the S*** heads ported by Vodacom number to Cell C without my authorization. I did not only sign a port form, but I also sent an email explicitly stating my lack of interest in porting to Cell C. Guess what, 2 weeks later, they changed my number to a new Cell C number and deleted my vodacom number from the network. I can only get it back after two months, then they have the nerve to charge me R250 extra....

I get a call at least once a week from CellC even after repeated requests to remove me from any lists that I am on. They know my name, phone number (obviously), contract details, etc. The one "consultant" had the nerve to tell me it was urgent which forced me to step out of a meeting, only for her to try sell me a CellC contract. I nearly flipped my lid with her. Nowadays I say yes I am very interested and ask that they go into as much detail as possible. Then place the phone on my desk until they eventually hang up.

You signed a contract with CellC... did you imagine you could get the contract and phone from CellC, but not have to use their network?

I am sure he meant he wanted the contract with the phone, but with a new sim, not his current one.

That way he could lock the sim away and use the phone.

was also on AutoPage cellular before I switched to smartcom, who then got handed to Vodacom SP. I too have received numerous phone calls from Cell-C offering the same 'free' phone packaged. They phone and address me by my mother's name (since she is the principal contract holder), and the only way they would know this is if the contract information was leaked/sold to them.

Are there any actions one can take to prevent such unsolicited calls, and also to stop them from using such unethical sales techniques to hook people into contracts?

ABSA

I know it's off topic just a tad... But ABSA does exactly the same thing. Since the day i have signed up for my second Vodacom contract (which I am very sorry I did) and i mean the day, i get atleast 3 calls a month. Offering me a credit card.

I also got a call from them but not just one they phone me at least once a week, they must be very desperate for business and sales. I would never move to Cell C.

OK, so who has suggestions on how to play with these people?

Leaving the phone on the desk while they rattle off their pitch is amusing.

Listening to the pitch for 10min, building up steam then having a rant is also quite satisfying...

Any other ideas? Maybe try to get the sales chick into a steamy conversation:D

Say to the telemarketer, "I already have a contract, but my dog doesn't, would you like to speak to him?" Then bark into the phone.

What about:

Listen to the sales pitch for 10min and say: "I just have to go ask my wife/husband" and wait 5 min. Come back and ask a question, then leave them hanging for 2 or 3 minutes.

Repeat for as long as possible. See if you can ask the same question a few times using different words :D

I have had 6 smss from CellC in the last 2 days. Some saying I am a winner(I know this is true because my mom says so:p:D) and other saying I can come collect a free phone....

I wish they would just fsck off :)

First ask consultant for their name, and then request a reference number for the call( all calls are recorded in case you say "yes", and there is a refernce number generated for each call).

Once you have this number, request that a note is put on the system stating that you are never to be contacted again.

If you are called again, lodge a complaint with the FSB, ICASA and DMA. you have the reference number for your initial request, so you will not have a case of " we did not know"

You shouldn't feel sorry for her. They won't feel the same about you. They only out for the sale, remember!
