I would love to know if this is possible and even if Cell C would consider this.

Cell C install a Steam mirror server in their data center that gives us unmetered updates to our games, even just in the evenings would be fine say 11 PM to 7 AM when updates dont reflect on your data use. It would be simple to implement as they wont be using the data from other networks all the time for us to update our games as well as easing congestion for them as it would be a proxy for the content.

How many users would like this?

They could even use it to attract and sell the service to gamers.

I think a hell of a lot of people would LOVE for this to be implemented, but to be fair, the odds of that happening is close to zero. I mean, my Steam library is probably on its way to 1tb and I WOULD be downloading all of it if I didn't pay so much for bandwidth.

You wont download that all the time. Face it once installed it is there and I dont think everyone has 1TB of games let alone HD space. That is also why I say let it only be unmetered at night when the big corporations are not using their data capacity, and during the day they can charge as normal to make sure people dont leave it running.

would really love if this actually made it to production .... would a big win for cell c considering 8ta is pushing everyone with the
new 10gb thing

I am considering 8ta just because of this reason alone, as I dont have access to ADSL.

Honestly if they just gave us the off peak period at a dirt cheap price that would be good enough. R500 for 10 gigs peak and 50 Gigs in the early morning anyone?

Bit unrealistic mate. kudos for trying though.

Got to agree with OP that Free bandwidth after hours from Steam would be awesome.

Which part is unrealistic? The network is idle in the early morning, it sits there costing money and generating nothing. Monetising this time frame would be pure profit for the service provided.
The only part that "may" be unrealistic is the 10 gig part for R500.

Unfortunately there is still a cost involved for them on the data which isn't so much affected by the time of day...remember they're reliant on quite a few other parties to bring that bandwidth to the consumer.

These guys lease capacity they don't buy per gig from an upstream provider. So no there is no incremental cost associated with delivering the data over and above the cost of the network build out. This is completely idle capacity that is of value to some of us.

The reason I would say this hasn't been done before is that most likely their billing system isn't that flexible.

How bout throwing in the latest linux distros as well - zero rated of course :)

Perhaps the way forward is to send a petition to Cell C to provide more value to the service viz.

1. zero rated steam downloads (maybe capped at 20 GB per month to prevent abuse)
2. zero rated windows updates.
3. zero rated open source software mirror.

Cell C rep can you help us out???

Good Day MightyMuffinMan

you always have the best requests if can say lol.
that would be nice, but that will not be possible.
but yes would be amazing to have that, i would be stuck to Steam.

Why would it not be possible even if its a night only service where Cell C network are not utilized? (12 till 6 at night)
Cost of server or nobody to admin it or other?

Just asking so we can give our minds some place to rest.

HI Elimentals

I'm not saying we would never look into it.
but let start with one think like unrestricted APN.
As we are looking into that (Looking in to it).
As all of this request unrestricted, well most.
One thing i can say Cell C been a young and open minded company.
Are open to ideas, but have to tackle one at a time.

If webafrica can do it, why can't CellC or any other mobile network provider for that matter...

Servers are cheap and HDD even cheaper.
Restrict access to it only between 11pm and 7am.
I don't think it will be abused, as you still have to pay for the game, before you can download it.

And the poor frontline staff will have to field calls saying things like, "what is the IP of the Cell C steam server" and "my steamwatch applications is not working properly so it downloaded from my cap". Forget it guys "freezoning" aint gonna happen in a mass market orientated company. The true answer here is giving a buttload of cheap data in after hours periods. This would also have appeal to a broader market not just us steam hounds.

lol yeah I try to be reasonable. Thanks for the response though better than leaving the tread to slowly die off. Retrospectively I guess Windows updates are the reason why some people even buy internet so it would be counter productive to offer zero rated.
