Cell C, what have you done?

Good article,I've noticed these trends of pushing high priced crap EPIC contracts lately from them and I'm glad you guys called them out on it.

These epic contracts are epic fails and they should come out with something more compelling,I'm on the verge of getting family members with upgrades coming up to rather change to other networks, most likely Telkom mobile or Vodacom, hell I'm even starting to warm up to the idea of MTN again!:wtf:

I'm yearning for when they launched stuff like the Chatmore packages and they were pushing that, with out of bundle call rates of R0.75 per minute instead of the current ridiculous R1.89 and R1.50 per minute rates.

A couple of years back, they tried to streamline their contract voice offerings by moving to the Straight UP contracts. It didn't last long, coz soon after that, they introduced a whole bunch of new contracts which, like the article states, was difficult to understand.

I am seriously not impressed with CellC anymore..

That little "Build your own contract" thing was about as awesome as it got... why they ever canned it is beyond me.

Yeah, their deals and packages suck. I've been due for an upgrade for 3 months now (and boy do they make sure you know by sending you an SMS every week and even calling 2 or 3 times... desperate much?). These new packages really should be renamed because they are seriously not at all "Epic" in any way.

So Cell C, you've lost another client, I called the retentions department and gave them my 30 days notice, they annoyingly tried a couple times to get me to change my mind and after repeatedly telling them 'NO' they even asked if I couldn't transfer the contract to someone else that might want it!?!? So my cancellation is in and confirmed via SMS, my number will be migrated to prepaid and this way I can keep the number and port to another network if I find a deal that is worth while.

/waves bye to cell c

Mine will happen soon enough....

My one solution to the retentions department issue though was to escalate to a manager on the first call and inform him that if I get another call or SMS in relation to my impending upgrade I WILL move to another network regardless of whatever deal they can offer me. All calls and smses stopped pretty much instantly.

Funny thing is that Telkom is the new Cell C, and Cell C is now another Vodacom....

The Straight up packages and Chatmore packages were indeed "EPIC".Wish they would push those again, and offer good phones on them in their brochures etc.

Unfortunately you may just be right,Cell C's network is now decent and Telkom coverage is shaky with a small footprint if you have Telkom only data(kinda like Cell C back in the day)

Never thought I'd say this as an old Cell C fan,but at this point in time with these stupid EPIC contracts you might as well move to Vodacom!:erm:

...the company did not respond...

Yeah, they are not great on the respond-thing.

At least they still offer month-to-month contracts: Buy a phone cash, get a cheap MtM contract and add data bundles = win.

That's exactly what I'm doing bought my 6S cash, and running on a month to month Chatmore 200 contract....used to buy data bundles but now just use the 150mb included and have taken out that R99 5gb data deal with mifi device for when i'm on the road or spending the night somewhere etc.

The other option is the 66c/min pre paid and a R1000/100GB for 365 days option

Makes the Epic option at R1.89/min look stupid expensive

Best deals are on the prepaid market. Always has been, always will be.

Statement from Cell C:

Our suite of products are built around consumer needs and lifestyle as well as market research that is conducted from time to time.

As the market has become more data centric, we introduced different plans to suit various needs - voice plans for the voice centric customers; data plans for the data centric customers; value plans for those who prefer to control their spend on voice, data or SMS as well as unlimited plans.

Customers prefer choice and flexibility, and we have provided them with the best variety of affordable products offering great value for money. All our deals are designed based on customer demand and based on Cell C’s growth over the last few years, customer clearly like our offers.

It is also important to note that both Tariffic and Research ICT Africa’s latest research reports confirm that Cell C still offers some of the best contract deals available in the market.

As pointed out by the writer You also can’t use the airtime to buy data or SMS bundles. Why not? With Vodacom's flexi contracts, you can spend your allocated airtime as you please. Cell C is totally losing the plot. I switched to Vodacom's 79c per minute prepaid (I am done with contracts) and it is definitely the most cost effective way.

Why is everyone so surprised. They were in such financial *****, and still offering the lowest call rates, spending gazillions on marketing and advertising. There had to come a point where someone said, "hey guys, you do realise that we aren't making any money right?"

If it was sustainable, all the operators would be offering the same

Can anyone assist please: Can you top up on these Epic contracts? If not, does the 150 airtime have to be used for voice and data? If you run out of the R150, do you have to go out of bundle for data usage?
