Only competition in the mobile market is in the quality of service.
The day you are able to pick a provider because of their tarrifs will be the day it's truly competitive.

Which means that can lower prices NOW if they wanted to, but they don't have to because there's no real competitive advantage to doing so...

Get rid of the Telkom monopoly first, then the prices should and must drop... or not?

The lowest common denominator in this case is Telkom...
 
The moaning and groaning about lowering prices will be expected from cell companies defending their profits, just like ALLL the other countries where regulators had to step in. So what's new?

Another thing what I hate them cell phone companies continuous using is how the prices are in fact so low because of competition. Utter bollocks - there is no competition and the prices don't reflect at all. The cell companies are just a legal cartel where they fix pricing. * end of rant *
 
I wish they would drop all the "bells" from the service.

Currently I'm paying 3 times for Netcare 911....

Why do they need to add a "free" hifi to a 24 month contract? Why not rather drop the monthly?
 
Where does one get these R5 starter packs they mention in the article? All the starter packs on Vodacom's site start at R200, I don't see any options for anything cheaper. (I was recently overseas in Asia and bought a starter pack for about R15 - that included bundled airtime.)

The relatively high mobile 'penetration' rates are because we're all getting 'screwed' ;) .. ok, kidding, they're probably because of the inelasticity of the market combined with the extremely high price of a landline.
 
ICASA needs to make an example out of Telkom.

Then Voda, MTN & CellC will catch a wake up call.
 
Sorry for the off topic... but is anyone experiencing any problems with vodacom? I cannot phone out or receive any calls...

Did they take up arms and go on strike too? :P

well it says R200 etc on the cover, but different places sell it for cheap, like R5 to R49 etc and it comes with some air time you can buy and transfer to your own number ;) I remeber this cause my mom bought alot of them and we were like now what we do with it(we got it for R1 per) and then my friend show'd be why its useful even it you got a number already :cool: its also useful for vodacom where if you don't use you phone alot to phone people but use it more as for receiving calls your airtime window runs out, and if you got funds on there and don't mind changing numbers its cheaper to get the sim and tranfer all funds to new sim, saving R120 'air time'/rental :D

Or offer cheaper contracts without cellphones...

Personally I would not mind in getting a new cellphone every 2 years, and pay extra for it, but for those who have their own cellphones, and only want a cheaper contract, should be able to do so.
 
MTN has previously said in press releases and comments in the media that they are not interested in getting involved in price war with the other providers. That in my book indicates collusion at some level.
 
Vodacom cant defend their prices, since they don't offer a service for those prices, try phoning a vodacom number now. I hope the f'ers loose a lot of money with their network outage!
 
THese people should be judged on their profits. Im not saying a profitable and well run company should be penalized but surely it is a good indicator as to if the rates they charge are reasonable?
