So, which is the best suggested smartphone holder for a car. Which will not break the air-vent as has happened in my case...............

I got this one recently. It has a proper clamping mechanism and nice and strong magnets. No vibrations or rattles. And charges nicely too. iPhone 12 Pro.

I prefer the window mounted ones but they’re not great on sunny days if your phone is prone to overheating.

Yeah phone gets hot and the whole thing comes off if in the sun or on a hot day. My dash-cam already has this issue.

I bought one of these on a whim, seems to work pretty well and I haven't had any issues yet even with direct sunlight.

How does it stick if the dash isn't smooth?

The suction cup thingy is also tacky, pretty sticky, so I would imagine that would have enough adhesion to keep it secured to the dash that has a texture effect on it.

I only tried it on the windscreen though.

I had a CD slot phone holder similar to this that worked great.

Wonder if they will make a phone holder that plugs into the usb port.

I bought one of these more than a year ago at Game. It's a Volkano magnetic phone holder so no clamping parts to fiddle with when attaching or releasing the phone.
Comes with extra metal plate in the box if your phone cover doesn't have any. When I first tested it I was still using the original seethru standard protective cover and just fitted the metal plate between the phone and cover. This allows it to "clamp" to the holder. I eventually bought another cover with metal backing. Been using this holder for more than a year now and still happy with it.

And as expected the heat and the suction cup are not friends. The sticky suction cup now keeps losing it's suction.

Any more suggestions?
send pic of your air vents, maybe someone can 3D print a suitable attachment

Do these metal plates you add into your cover affect the phones reception at all?
